Nu………………..från och med idag är jag pensionär! Ja, faktiskt och det känns riktigt bra. Att vara folkpensionär trots mina endast 61 år är kalas. Tänk vad mycket jag ska hinna med att göra nu förutom att mata duvorna i parken. Nu kan jag spela på min steel, sitta i studion och leka, putsa på bilen, laga god mat åt hustrun med mera. Som ni kanske redan förstått….. det blir ingen förändring mot mitt tidigare liv. Endast den fördelen att jag får en liten extra inkomst från staten.

Ja, till och med gamla anrika CMA har börjat kalla sin årligt återkommande Country Music Fan Fair för endast Music Fest. Anledningen lär vara att det förekommit väldigt många andra typer av musik på den här festivalen, vilket de även fått kritik för.  Precis som det är med en del countryfestivaler i Sverige. JL.

George Jones: My Very Special Guests will be released by Columbia/Legacy on May 31 and is an expanded re-issue of Jones' 1979 duets album of the same name. Compiled by producer Gregg Geller, the two-disc set adds 27 duets recorded during the ‘80s and ‘90s to the original album's 10 songs. Jones performs with Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Costello, James Taylor, and the late Waylon Jennings, Tammy Wynette, Alan Jackson, Patty Loveless, Randy Travis, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Buck Owens, and the late Johnny Cash. Occasionally Jones steps out with artists beyond Nashville, such as B.B. King, Shelby Lynne, and the late Ray Charles...

Blame The Vain, a new album from Dwight Yoakam, is due out June 14 on New West/Via Records, marking his first affiliation with the label. The album’s first single and video will be releaesd in April and a major cross-country tour is set to launch in July. This marks Yoakam’s first album of all-new material since 2003’s Population Me. QUESTION: I heard that Chris LeDoux was going into the hall of fame. Do you have any information on that?

ANSWER: Chris LeDoux will be inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado on July 16^th. LeDoux is the first person to be inducted in two categories, "bareback" and "notables," the latter for his contributions to the sport through his music. LeDoux died March 9 of cancer and is the 1976 world bareback riding champ. He is one of six cowboys named to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame this year.

QUESTION: My dad’s favorite song was Ray Price’s “You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me.” DO you know who wrote that song and when was it popular?

ANSWER: “You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me” was written by Jim Weatherly. It was number one the week of October 6^th, 1973.

Hello fellow players,
Here's a story that is a little more current than some of my stories from yesteryear. It involves a singer who has skyrocketed to fame and glory in the last year and very deservedly so. His name is Dierks Bentley.

One of my employees was free-lancing around town and brought me a cassette tape of one of the singers that he was working with. I listened to it and thought "Yeah, this guy sings well." About 3 weeks later, my employee Buck Reid said "I need you to help me out and work with Dierks tonight at a beautiful club on Second Ave." Since I had nothing else to do that night, I drove to the club, unloaded my gear, searched high and low for a parking place, made my way back to the club which just happened to be in the old Sho-Bud Music City manufacturing facility.

After setting up my steel and amp on the very small stage, a very thin figure with sort of scraggly hair, came up behind me and asked, "Are you the steel player?" I looked at him and replied, "Yes, who are you?" He stuck out his hand, looked me right in the eye and said, "I'm Dierks."  I said, "Where did you get a name like that?" He laughed and said, "Where did you get a name like Seymour?"

The experience on the stage throughout the evening was wonderful. I was shocked at how this very young person knew every old Faron Young record, some of which I was on, every Webb Pierce, Stonewall Jackson, Jimmy Dickens and Ernest Tubb song that was ever recorded. He made the evening very pleasurable.

I worked this job with him a few more times, then got totally sick of the traffic and parking situation downtown and I told him that I would not be interested in working anymore at that location in the future. He took this news very hard, as it was obvious that there was a friendly bond growing between us. However, he hired a steel guitarist named Gary Morse to replace me and Gary has obviously worked out very well.

Dierks career has very deservedly gone through the roof. I'm glad Gary could help his career by seeing that he always wore his Sho-Bud t-shirt on important occasions. As far as Gary Morse goes, he is a wonderful, traditional steel guitarist with an incredibly nice personality who has paid his road dues over and over and also deserves all the fame and glory that comes his way.

Idag är det torsdag men helgdag och vilodag för de flesta! Hustrun kan behöva en extra vilodag då hon jobbar stenhårt varje vardag under normala veckor. Själv har jag det lite lugnare som pensionär och sköter handling och matlagning och skriver Nyhetsbrev!

Idag åker vi till Vindö i Stockholms skärgård för att hälsa på en gammal kompis, Bosse Bodén. Vi träffades första gången i min ungdom då jag jobbade på Nordiska Musikförlaget. Bosse lånade ut en Ray Priceskiva till mig, en EP! Det kan ha varit en Hank Snow. Minnet sviker!

hejsan, vi skall spela på Köpings-torg på lördag kl 13:00, det är deras årliga stora bilutställning och jippon från morgon till kväll. Vi skall spela en del countrytoner men mycket dam-rock eftersom det är bilträff - dock läste jag att kl. 11:00 skall Tennessee Drifters spela och vad jag har hört så blir det mycket låtar i "johnny cash"-stil. Så det blir country i stor dos skulle jag tro.

Onsdag 11/5 2005, kl 20:00 spelar Freja Bluegrass Band på KoM musik & bar, Olivedalsgatan 13 i Göteborg.

Freja Bluegrass Band har värmt upp under våren med spelningar i Floda, men fortsätter nu i Göteborg inför sommarens festivaler. Huvudpersonen i bandet är 15-åriga Freja som har en ovanlig talang för att sjunga Bluegrass och spelar banjo som få i hennes ålder. Freja backas upp av Thorsten Jakobsson och Lars Möllesjö på gitarr. Lars är mycket rutinerad musiker som spelat med otaliga artister och på många skivinspelningar. Bland mycket annat med Samuelssons och som kapellmästare på Elida osv. osv. Lars och Thorsten reste tidigare till Europas största Bluegrassfestivaler med gruppen West Coast Playboys, EWOB i Tjeckien 2002 och EWOB i Holland 2003. Nu nystartar de med Freja. QUESTION: I heard that Waylon Jennings' son had his own radio show. Do
you have any information?
ANSWER: Waylon's son Shooter Jennings and Cowboy Jack Clement will
host new shows on Sirius Satellite Radio's Outlaw Country channel. The
Cowboy Jack Clement Show and Shooter Jennings' Electric Rodeo will air each
Saturday and repeat on Sundays. Clement is a songwriter, producer and singer
who has worked with Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Charley Pride, U2 and
others. Jennings, the son of Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, has gained
national attention following the release of his album, Put the O Back in
Country.

QUESTION: My dad says that Roy Rogers also had hit records, in addition
to being a movie star. Is that true?
ANSWER: Between 1946 and 1991, Roy Rogers placed 12 singles on the
country music charts. His biggest hit was "My Chickashay Gal," which peaked
at # 4 in 1947.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Emmylou Harris was on a new album that was recorded at some festival. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Emmylou Harris is one of several artists featured on “Telluride Bluegrass Festival: 30 Years,” a CD and DVD celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Colorado festival, that is set for release June 7^th. The package also includes performances by Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Hot Rize, Kasey Chambers and the Yonder Mountain String Band. The DVD also contains concert footage and interviews with artists and fans. This year's festival is scheduled for June 16-19.

QUESTION: You recently answered a question about Chris LeDoux being inducted into a state hall of fame. Isn’t there also some special award due at one of the national awards shows?

ANSWER: Chris LeDoux will be honored posthumously with the Academy of Country Music's Pioneer Award during the organization's May 17 televised awards program.
Garth Brooks will accept the award on behalf of LeDoux's family.
The 40th annual Academy of Country Music Awards will be broadcast from Las Vegas on CBS-TV. LeDoux died March 9 after a lengthy illness.

Bobbe's Nashville News
Good news on the home front! Most of the "Time Jumpers" band is back together and continuing the Monday evening performances at the Station Inn on Twelfth Ave. in Nashville.

This band is legendary for playing very precision and authentic Western Swing tunes and arrangements. Something I never thought I would see anytime or anywhere, especially in Nashville. Some of the town's finest musicians have seen fit to keep this wonderful music that has always used steel guitar, alive. This is the classic configuration of upright acoustic bass, unamplified drums, Stromberg full body electric acoustic guitar and steel guitar featuring John Hughey or Doug Jernigan, accordion at times for some of the old Spade Cooley arrangements, fiddles are handled by Aubrey Haney and other studio musicians that are available.

One of the wonderful things about the group is the fact that you can sit right in front of them and still have an intelligent conversation at your own table. The volume is perfect. The classic arrangements are as they were written originally. They do a lot of two, three and four part harmonies between steel leads and strings. Individually, every one of the musicians are of extremely high caliber and they all have the taste to lay back and work together in this wonderful Western Swing band.

Now I must add a few words about the lead guitarist in this group, Andy Reiss, a 25 year veteran of Nashville studios and live dates and ex-band leader for Reba McIntyre. Andy's abilities know no bounds. He is equally at home on Southern Gospel, hard rock, adult contemporary and pure Grady Martin country. His working guitar collection is as vast as anyone's, even including unusual guitars like a Fender Jaguar, Gibson Birdland, 1936 Stromberg with Charlie Christian pickups, DiAngelico and a myriad of custom Strats and Teles. His studio amplifier collection includes tiny Fenders, large Fenders and old Gibson tube amps along with all of the modern toys. I may also add that I am thankful to Andy for being on every one of my CDs regardless of how busy he is doing sessions for the industry. I know many of you have heard this man's work because of the posts I get on the forum and the many emails I get asking me who the great guitarist on my sessions is.

My jazzy Christmas album was an album that featured Andy prominently. If any of you have any projects to record in Nashville, you could do no better than to hire any of the fine players in this group, especially Andy Reiss. So anyway, the good news this week is this band is working again at the Station Inn on Monday nights in Nashville, TN. and when you come to town, they are a must see. The only problem this band has is that steel guitarist Smiley Roberts will always be there partying in the front row. Of course, he's as much fun to watch as the group is to hear.

The Sony/BMG merger has put a lot of people on the street so if you're thinking about coming to Nashville to find a job in the music industry, now is not a good time to do it. Of course, if you're rich and can bankroll your own indie (independent) label, now is a good time for that! The indie labels are the only American owned labels in town anyway and may be the salvation of country music as we know it. Consider what Broken Bow Records is doing. Who knows?

Jag håller med Bobbe om att The Station Inn är ett MÅSTE om man besöker Nashville. I första hand på måndagskvällar men även övriga kvällar då det spelas fantastisk bluegrass. 

En kanonrestaurang jag vill rekommendera: Lemon Thai, Ryttarhalsvägen 22 i Kungens Kurva i Stockholm. Luncherna erbjuder mycket god mat för 65:- (tre rätter att välja på) och för övrigt finns kyckling, kött och skaldjur från ca. 65:-

Man kan säga att stället ligger på baksidan av City Gross, lite avsides så att säga. Men mycket populärt så kom i tid till lunchen!

Veckorna går enormt fort, speciellt då helgdagar ligger mitt i dessa! Åkte till Vindö och min gamle kompis Bosse Bodén och hälsade på i torsdags. Vindö ligger bortom Gustavsberg en bra bit. Vädret var fint men lite kyligt som det kan vara i maj månad. Bosse och hustru bor där på Vindö nästan hela året om och har faktiskt några hönor pickande på tomten. Kul!

Statues to be unveiled at Crystal Palace,   The Bakersfield Californian
Bakersfield's own country music legend Buck Owens will honor nine of his peers and himself May 25 with the unveiling of 10 life-size bronze statues at the Crystal Palace. Tickets went on sale today.

Statues of Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Elvis Presley, George Strait, Hank Williams Sr., Bob Wills and Owens himself will be presented to the Crystal Palace, made by sculptor Bill Rains.
Owens along with Dierks Bentley, Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel, Joe Nichols and Brad Paisley will perform. Honorees Brooks, Haggard, Jones and Nelson are scheduled to attend.

Tickets for the event went on sale at 11 a.m. and can be purchased at Vallitix.com, all Vallitix locations, the Crystal Palace Box Office or by calling 322-5200. Tickets are $10 and only eight tickets will be sold per person.

The unveling will take place in the parking lot of the Crystal place with the gates opening at 6:30 p.m. and the dedication starting at 8. The event will be standing room only and no public seating will be available. The Crystal Palace will be closed to the public on May 25 for this event.

Tack Michael Axelsson för plattan med The Heather Village Band. 11 låtar i Hank Williams och Johnny Cashstil. 2 bra sångare med gitarrer + något munspel och lite pedal steel. Det låter inte så dumt faktiskt. Ibland kan det vara skönt med så här lite i bakgrunderna så man hör sången ordentligt. Hanks och Johnnys låtar tillåter att sjungas med bara gitarr som komp. Lite ryckigt i kompet är det dock och min rekommendation till herrarna är att vi inspelning använda någon form av rytmklick! Det behövs knappast vid "live"-framträdande men absolut vid inspelningar. QUESTION: The radio folks were talking about a Merle Haggard Award at the Academy of Country Music Awards. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: The Merle Haggard Award is an honor given to those artists who win the ACM’s "triple crown" of Top New Artist, Top Male/Female Artist and Entertainer of the Year.

QUESTION: I heard something about a Willie Nelson relief concert being released on DVD. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: “Willie Nelson -- Songs for Tsunami Relief,” was recently released on both CD and DVD by Lost Highway Records. The recorded project was a January 9th benefit concert in Austin, Texas. Proceeds from the new project will be donated to tsunami relief and rebuilding efforts of CARE and UNICEF in Southeast Asia.

Hello fellow players,
We have had requests to cover a subject that I have touched on dramatically many times on the steel guitar forum. This is the subject of tone and steel guitar pickups. The issue of modern pickups as opposed to older pickups. First of all, as I have said many times, and I can't seem to get it across to many players, is that the pickup on the steel guitar has very little to do with the tone timbre of the guitar.

A pickup is like a microphone that is used to sing or talk through. What goes into it is what comes out. As we all know, there is a lot of difference between Ernest Tubbs voice and Dolly Parton's voice. If Ernest borrowed Dolly's microphone, he would not sound like Dolly anymore than if you put an Emmons pickup on an MSA steel guitar, it will sound like an Emmons guitar.

Fender used to make a model of Telecaster that they put an exact copy of a Gibson pickup next to the bridge. This didn't even start to make the Fender guitar sound like a Gibson. The pickup on a steel guitar only picks up what goes into it and amplifies it. Many steel guitars being built today, a couple of which are extremely high quality guitars, do not have the richness, balance and warmth of some of the guitars built in the 60's and 70's, regardless of how much better they may be from a construction standpoint. I get several calls and emails a week saying "Boy, I love my new "blank", it's the greatest playing guitar I ever had. However, it sure doesn't sound like my old "blank". What pickup do I use to make it sound exactly like my old Sho-Bud or Emmons?"

Sorry friends, but that's like me asking "What microphone do I need to buy to sound exactly like Julio Iglesias?" One question is as ridiculous as the other. There is no pickup to make your guitar sound like something it isn't and there is no microphone to make me sound like Julio.

There are many things that give a steel guitar it's voice. Back several years ago, there was a machinist in Nashville who started making aluminum legs for steel guitars. Several professional players bought these legs but within a week or two noticed a detrimental change in the tone or voice of their guitars regardless of the weight that they saved, everyone opted to go back to the steel legs and enjoy the finer tone.

Isn't it interesting that the material the legs are made of affects the tone of the guitar more than the pickup does?

Of course, there are a few subtle differences that different pickups do make to a guitar. Some hum-bucking pickups will cancel out the lowest frequencies and make them a little quieter and some pickups have a little better fidelity than others, but this is not what we are talking about here. What we are talking about is the big, fat, rich voice of the guitar and how to get it into the listeners ears.

The point of this whole letter is for the many of you who have bought new steel guitars and are trying pickup after pickup and are still not quite happy with what you're getting, you should start looking for another guitar that will give you what you need and want. Pickups won't do it anymore than it's case or the color of the guitar will.

If a tire goes flat on your car, putting new sparkplugs in won't help. If your racecar isn't winning at the track, painting it black won't help. Take care of the problem at it's source.

I would like to add that most original Sho-Bud pickups have gotten microphonic over the years and some have just plain shorted out. Naturally, these pickups are faulty and need to be replaced. When a new pickup is installed on your classic old Sho-Bud, some of you may be shocked to find that your great Sho-Bud tone is not only there, but even more pronounced than with the original pickups. I do recommend changing early Sho-Bud pickups.

Fifteen years ago, my push-pull Emmons was famous in Nashville for sounding so great. In some studios, I was getting an excessive amount of 60 cycle hum. Knowing that I needed to get rid of this hum to keep the recording accounts that were using these studios, I would have to change my pickup to the new hum-bucking variety. I was terrified that my famous Emmons tone would then be gone. So one night I played my guitar all alone for about a half an hour, listening to the tone, then changed the pickup to a George L 10-1, fully expecting my tone to be gone. Not only was my great push-pull tone not gone, but it was possibly even better than it was before and the only thing that was missing was the hum.

Anxious to hear what it did in the studio, I skeptically did my next session for the same critical producers and engineers with my newly George L 10-1 equipped Emmons PP. To everyone's amazement, the tone was incredible and the hum was completely gone. I have since switched to another hum-bucking pickup, the Bill Lawrence model 708. They don't really sound any better but they're prettier to look at.

Through much experience in dealing with hundreds of professional players throughout the industry, I have drawn the conclusion that the George L pickup may not be the prettiest pickup in the world, but it knows no equal when it comes to the reproduction of the sound of the guitar. It's a truly great pickup and is used by many steel guitar companies today as original equipment. The moral of all this is, you cannot create sound or timbre with a pickup, however, with a quality unit, you can reproduce the finest tonal qualities your guitar has to offer, without hum or extraneous noises.

Okej då! Jag var ute och cyklade (fint väder) med numreringen. Jag hade själv tappat bort Nyhetsbrevet med 36, därför denna förvirring. Men om jag nu numrerar det här som 39 så måste väl allting ha fallit på plats? Rätta mig igen om jag har fel!

Visst är det härligt med Annandag Pingst? Det är idag alltså, men den har gått från röd dag i almanackan till en vanlig vardag. Lite tråkigt faktiskt men inte spelar det någon roll för oss pensionärer!  Jag har varit i Gävle på ett kort besök i helgen och därför haft lite ont om tid att sitta vid datorn. Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, Wynonna, Andy Griggs, Joe Nichols, Sawyer Brown and SHeDAISY have been added to the artist lineup for the Nightly Concerts at The Coliseum during the 2005 CMA Music Festival. In addition, the Daily Concerts on the Greased Lightning® Daytime Stages during CMA Music Festival will host more than 100 artists at Riverfront Park. Opening the festival are Montgomery Gentry on that stage at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 9. Aaron Tippin will open Friday, June 10; Buddy Jewell will launch Saturday, June 11; and Lorrie Morgan will christen Sunday, June 12...

On Aug. 2, Lost Highway will release Willie Nelson’s reggae project Countryman. Included on the album are covers of Jimmy Cliff's “The Harder They Come" and "Sitting In Limbo." STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to Lefty Frizzell, his 1951 hit song “Mom and Dad’s Waltz” came from a real part of his life.

In a 1970’s interview, Lefty commented, “I hadn’t eaten in quite a while and was plenty hungry when I wrote that song. I was in Dallas, Texas and was out of a job and out of just about everything. And I just naturally started thinking about Mom and Dad back home in West Texas and how I’d gladly walk those miles back home just to see them again and to get one of Mom’s good Sunday dinners. And from there the song just sort of wrote itself.”

“Mom and Dad’s Waltz” was the flipside of Lefty’s 1951 hit, “Always Late.”

“Mom And Dad’s Waltz” also made the country charts August 18^th, 1951 and peaked at # 2, where it stayed for eight weeks.

It was Lefty’s 7^th charted song and was on the charts for 29 weeks.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Merle Haggard is recording an album with some new girl singer. Do you now anything about that?

ANSWER: Merle Haggard is featured on a song titled “Politically Uncorrect,” which is one of the tracks in Gretchen Wilson’s “All Jacked Up” CD, which is set for September 27^th release.

QUESTION: I have heard that Ronnie Milsap is going to be on TV with some Spanish band. DO you have any information?

ANSWER: Ronnie Milsap will tape an episode of “CMT Crossroads” with the Los Lonely Boys, which will air June 17.

QUESTION: The guy on radio mentioned that some guy who wrote a George Jones hit song was recording an album of his own. I didn’t catch the name or the whole story. Do you know?

ANSWER: Keith Anderson, who wrote the Grammy nominated George Jones/Garth Brooks hit—“Beer Run,” has a new album titled “Three Chord Country and American Rock & Roll.”

QUESTION: I heard that Randy Travis is doing great in gospel music and just recently won some gospel music award. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Randy Travis recently won his sixth Gospel Music Association Dove award for his “Passing Through,” as country album of the year.

Hello fellow players,
Something interesting and different this week. I'm giving you links to a historic, classic Faron Young album that I played on in 1971 at Columbia Studio B, known as the Quonset Hut on Music Row in Nashville. This was one of the most famous studios in Nashville and the one that set the standard for all others and put Music Row on the face of the Earth.

This album, of course, was released on thirty three and a third vinyl disc.

One of the big reasons I want everyone to hear this album is because it was recorded using the classics methods of the 50's through 70's. This means no overdubs, everybody recorded at the same time and four songs were totally recorded and finished, except for mixing, in one 3 hour period. Faron and all the musicians recorded at the same time, no backing up or starting over unless something horrible happened and if you were the person who made this horrible thing happen, you would suffer the scorn, laughter and ridicule of the entire studio crew. This included Faron. Is there a singer today who does every song in one take?

Faron walked in, named the song and the key and would say "I want steel intro, piano first fill, guitar and fiddles together on the bridge, steel turnaround, guitar play the release out." We'd either write down what he said or try to remember it. We would run about half the song and then Faron would stop us and say "Ok, boys, lets roll tape. We got it." Faron was his usual, hilarious, wonderful self between takes.

It seems like back in this day and time, you really had to be a musician or you wouldn't get hired. Today it seems as though an average player can go in by himself, overdub his part and take as long as he wants to do it to get it perfect, sign the union card, and he's gone. It takes more time to do just one musicians part today than it used to take to do four songs complete with everybody. I guess this is new technology!

Anyway, the musicians on this Faron album are Grady Martin on guitar, Joe Zinkin on upright bass, Bunky Kiels on piano, Tommy (Porkchop) Markham on drums, myself on steel and the fiddle players were Buddy Spicher, Big Red Hayes, Johnny Gimbel and Hank Singer, Leon Rhodes on ticktack rhythm guitar and Ray Eddington on acoustic rhythm guitar. These were all Nashville "A Team" in the 60's and 70's.

This classic album was on limited release only so I feel it's necessary to share this with my great friends on the mailing list.

Dierks Bentley released his sophomore effort Modern Day Drifter on May 10 and is supporting it with appearances on the Tonight Show, CMT Insider, Good Morning America, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Bentley is also featured in the current issue of No Depression and will be in a forthcoming issue of People. He wrote or co-wrote eight of the 11 tracks on the disc including current single, “Lot of Leavin’ Left to Do”...

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Naomi Judd had become a doctor. What’s that all about?

ANSWER: Naomi Judd recently received the Doctor of Performing Arts and Doctor of Nursing degrees from Grand Canyon University.

QUESTION: My aunt used to sing a song about “Pink Pedal Pushers.” She said it was on the radio all the time back in the late 1950’s. Do you have any information on such a record?

ANSWER: “Pink Pedal Pushers” was Carl Perkins’ 6^th chart single. It peaked at # 17 in 1958 and was on the charts for 9 weeks.

QUESTION: I know that this question has nothing to do with classic country music but I don’t know who else to ask. The radio folks were talking about Don Knotts being inducted into a hall of fame. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Don Knotts, the 80-yer-old former cast member of "The Andy Griffith Show" and "Three's Company," will be honored by his hometown of Morgantown, WV -- August 12th – 15th with a parade, film festival and local beer to be brewed in his honor. Knotts is also getting the first star on what's hoped will be West Virginia's version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Dwight Yoakam received some kind of degree. Do you have any information on that? And do you know the title of his first hit record?

ANSWER: Dwight Yoakam recently received an honorary doctorate degree from Ohio Valley College. He was the commencement speaker and also received the key to the city. His first chart single was “Honky Tonk Man,” which peaked at # 3 in 1986.

QUESTION: Back in the 50,s’ there was a country record on the radio about “living Fast and Dying Young.” That’s probably not the correct title but it was very popular at the time. Do you know the correct title and the name of the singer?

ANSWER: “Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young,” was Faron Young’s 5^th chart single. It was number one in 1955.

Bobbe's Nashville News
The news this week concerns Nashville's upcoming CMA Music Festival (formerly Fan Fair). We still call it Fan Fair around here.

Back in the 60's, the grandfather of this celebration was called the Disc Jockey Convention. This was an event where the labels and artists schmoozed all the disc jockeys and program directors that they could lure to Nashville with free rooms, free food and all they could drink. Jack Daniels flowed like water over Niagara Falls. Nobody had to drive anywhere because everybody stayed right in the center of downtown Nashville.

The Hermitage and Andrew Jackson hotels were where everything happened, but every other downtown business rented their window displays to record labels and music instrument manufacturing concerns.

I can remember seeing several windows at Penney's full of Fender Musical Instrument Company products and every window in sight had some star's latest album taped up and prominently displayed.

Downtown Nashville was an exciting place if you were in or cared about the music business at all.

I remember some of the upper floors on the Andrew Jackson hotel being used only for jam session rooms and seeing Curly Chalker and Julian Tharp jam for 4 days in a row with barely any sleep. Nobody really wanted to sleep anyway.

This is where I got to see some of the finest musicians in the world truly let their hair down and play everything they knew, totally uninhibited. The likes of Lenny Breau, Buddy Emmons, Jerry Reed, Al Bruno, Herb Ellis, Billy Bowman, Maurice Anderson, Billy Braddy, Tom Morrell, Bobby Garrett, Sonny Garrish and it seems like every road musician who would normally be on the road, was in for this celebration because the stars they worked for had to schmooze the deejays. Everybody wanted their record played and would do about anything to have the deejays remember them when they got back home.

The fantastic players who could be heard on a close enough to touch basis was unbelievable at the old disc jockey convention. I remember the convention being so much fun that if you could walk a straight line, the police would write you a ticket for being sober and buy you a drink. You could actually be arrested for walking into a club without a guitar. A star who had a bus could be fined for not double parking on Broadway. The jam session between Little Jimmy Dickens, Hank Snow and Porter Wagoner was to see who could out rhinestone the other one.

Fan Fair cut about 80 percent of this high pressure promotion out. The Andrew Jackson hotel was torn down and the name was changed to Fan Fair. It's hard to sit up and jam all night in a booth at the Fairgrounds which is where the deejay convention went when it became Fan Fair. Besides, the cows didn't like it.

I'm hoping the CMA will take a step backwards and bring back the informal atmosphere where jam sessions just naturally happen among musicians. Fender used to sponsor a full day of shows and Peavey used to rent a room for 3 days just for musicians to have a place to show off. It sure would be nice if the mighty Peavey Corporation stepped up and gave us musicians something to look forward to as they have done so wonderfully in the past.

I just want to go on record as saying, Hartley Peavey's company has done more to support steel guitarists than any company in recent years. People like Mike Brown, Paul Robinson and Hollis Calvert have always gone out of their way to do whatever they can for the steel guitarist. Bless them, for they shant be forgot!

Vill du göra lite reklam för vår Countryfestival på Lane Loge 22-23 juli, är du snäll. I år satsar vi på enbart svenska artister. Dagtid båda dagarna kl. 10-17 kommer vi även i år att ha massor av aktiviteter för hela familjen. Vad sägs om linedanceuppvisning, kobingo, uppvisning av indianska danser, hölassåkning med indianöverfall, lerduveskytte, simulatorskytte med hagel, Björnjägare på besök, femkamp med westerngrenar, pelargonutställning, guldvaskning, ponnyridning, knallemarknad, träskulpturering med motorsåg, pajtävling, Westernshow med kalvfösing, dummy roping mm? Under fredagen har vi även styrketävling där Sveriges starkaste Cowboy ska utses efter grenarna säckbärning, däckvältning och slädrace. Blir nog underhållande. Nytt för i år är att vi har artistframträdande kl. 13 och 15 också på utescen. Kvällens countrygala startar kl. 20.00. Vi är mycket glada över att presentera följande artister: fredag 22 juli: Angela Lidin, Pilgrim, Marina Uppgren & the Cheating heart, Highway 40 och Martin Nilsson. På lördag 23 juli inleder vi med den rikstäckande talangtävlingen kl. 20 och på scen under kvällen har vi Country Cream, Inger Nordström & Rhinestone band, Tennesse Drifters och Dottie & the Cosmos Cowboys. a female fiddle player, sometimes too much rock, which often is the case at  the Exit/In where the soundmix isn't the best... he has a new album "Lucky Star". He is doin' great in Texas gettin' airplay...

Barn Burners was appearing under this name for the last time, obvious reason, there is another band with that name in Country Music. Americana, but still nice vocal... based in Baltimore, MD. drums guitar & bass... no more to say...

Heidi Howe - Louisville, KY. - guitar & bass - somewhat weird vocal, sang a song about John Denver.... so time for my favorite:

Elizabeth Cook - the real deal - got this email from her the day before the show:
"Hey Hans! Yes, I will be at the exit/in tomorrow night. (Tuesday May 17th) I will have a fiddle player with me (a great one named Matt Combs who plays with Mike Snider a lot) but two electric guitars. I don't really have any control over the house mix and the exit/in has,
in my opinion, a very loud drum sound. I'm not sure exactly what songs I'm doing yet, so I can't promise how pure my show will be but I promise to be at least as pure as the ACM Awards - ha! Hope to see you there!

Note: I skipped the Academy of Country Music awards show on live ABC TV to see this show.... I didn't regret it one bit!! Gretchen won best female vocal, not expecting that... Kenny Chesney - newly wed, didn't bring his wife to the show... made a lot of media noice...

Wednesday night:
I enjoyed the singing at the Sutler yesterday, but it's hard for a diehard country fan to see Elizabeth without a steel guitar in the band... lap steel or pedal doesn't matter....

It's also hard to take a Richard & Linda Thompson song as the ending of the set... however "I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight" is probably the most COUNTRY song that they ever wrote...

Still asking for a live version of "Coldest Hearts In Town" recorded by Elizabeth & Pinmonkey for some project years ago...

There are so my country songs that ends up in the can..... too sad with the above canned...

I know Elizabeth has her choice of broadening her audience and that her artistic choices can only be made by her....

Still I like Elizabeth best with the sound she had on the Exit/In show last september when they had an Hank Williams Tribute evening... lots of steel & fiddle & fantastic vocal...

Other artists at the Sutler: Tracy Reynolds - has a cd on CUPIT "The Places She Goes". Born In Canada, but now in Nashville. Supported by mandolin/fiddle, bass and congas... nice vocal and a good warm-up for Elizabeth.. who did the same show as the day before... nice vocal and strong fiddle, same people backing, but no steel... She was kinda embarassed when the swimsuit issue was commented....

Her hubbie followed with some odd kinda music... rock with country influence... ex-Pinmonkey drummer Rick Shell, joined him... has a cd on his own now "Salt Of the Earth"... Tim has one cd on SIRE, and two indie releases...

After two songs I couldn't stand it no more... too much rock and way too loud.. took bus #8 to town and got on the 10.15 bus #15 for my Midway motel.

The upcoming album from the Kentucky Headhunters is a collection of songs selected by the band from the Sony/ATV Music Publishing catalogs. Big Boss Man will be out June 21 and includes the title track as well as "Honky Tonk Blues," "Walkin' After Midnight," "Take These Chains (From My Heart)," "Hey Good Lookin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," and more. The project is the brainchild of Tom Long of Sony/ATV Music Publishing Nashville and Tree Productions. CbuJ Entertainment will handle national distribution.

 

Chesney named Entertainer of the Year at ACM Awards

 The 40th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards were held Tues. (5/17) at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. Kenny Chesney won Entertainer of the Year, Keith Urban took home Top Male Vocalist, and Gretchen Wilson won both Top New Artist and Top Female Vocalist. Garth Brooks was on hand to accept the Pioneer Award on behalf of the late Chris LeDoux and Neal McCoy was honored with the fan-voted ACM/Home Depot Humanitarian Award.

In previous years Chesney had won Top New Vocalist and Top Male Vocalist, and now with the Entertainer of the Year win he has earned the ACM’s Triple Crown. Only six other artists have earned this honor, placing Chesney among the likes of Brooks & Dunn, Dixie Chicks, Mickey Gilley, Merle Haggard and Barbara Mandrell.

GAC has secured exclusive rights to broadcast encore presentations of the awards show and will air it beginning June 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Additional air dates are set for September and October.

ANSWER: Dolly Parton and Wynonna will perform at the June 9-12^th CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. Other performers include Andy Griggs, Joe Nichols, Sawyer Brown, SheDaisy, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley, Big & Rich, Cowboy Troy, Diamond Rio, Sara Evans, Josh Gracin, Miranda Lambert, Jo Dee Messina, Craig Morgan, Rascal Flatts, LeAnn Rimes, Julie Roberts, Kenny Rogers, Blake Shelton, Sugarland, Travis Tritt, Keith Urban, Van Zant, Phil Vassar, Gretchen Wilson, Lee Ann Womack and Trisha Yearwood.

QUESTION: You recently mentioned Red Sovine in your newsletter. I know he had several hits-but didn’t he also have some hits with other singers?

ANSWER: Red Sovine and Goldie Hill scored a # 14 hit in 1955 with “Are You Mine?” Red and Webb Pierce had two chart singles, “Why Baby Why,” in 1955 and “Little Rosa” in 56.

Hello fellow players,
As this is being written, myself and many steel guitar players are loading their vehicles and heading to the town of Chattanooga, Tennessee. This is the fifth year of one of the better steel guitar shows being held in the United States. Plenty of dealers and manufacturers displaying their wares and the world's better known players showing their abilities. This is a wonderful chance for everyone to rub elbows together, pro, non-pro, manufacturer and dealer and a great place to hear the greatest jokes. This show is Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21.

I get many pictures from you players from time to time showing me your kitty cats sleeping on your guitars, or your dog in sunglasses sitting behind playing it and hear lots of interesting stories about your pets and how they interact with steel guitar. I find this very interesting as I, myself, have had several store cats who loved to sleep on the pad of the Lloyd Green Sho-Buds.

I now have a kitty at home who thinks my double 8 pedal Sho-Bud is his own private house and gets very irritated when I try to move the guitar, clean under it, or remove him from his "house" for some reason or other.

I won't be able to answer all the emails because I get so many, but I would like to hear any interesting pet stories that involve steel guitar or anything that involves your pet in your music business at all. I already received some very hilarious pictures and stories even without asking. It seems as though people who love animals have a great appreciation for music and each other.

The great lapsteel "Slide-Off" will be held here in Hendersonville on July 5, 2005 and will include such astounding players as Maurice Anderson, Tommy White, Billy Robinson, Randy Beavers, Howard White and one average player, me! But I'm practicing real hard as I have some pretty stiff players to work against! There are plenty of inexpensive new motels in the area and after a big day of steeling here at my store, the whole show moves to the American Legion in Donelson, another Nashville suburb, and is combined with the big North Tennessee Steel Guitar Association jam session where you can hear steel guitar with the training pedals on.

Let me know if you're coming so I can know how much caviar and Black Angus steak to buy. Oops, I meant peanut butter and jelly!

I won't be able to answer your comments most likely, however, I would like to hear some feedback from any of your who viewed the ACM Awards on television Tuesday night.

 Det har varit en spännande vecka så här långt. Det började med att jag fick ett ilsket brev från en journalist i Örebro som påstod att jag stulit en text från honom. Läs mer om detta nedan. Då jag kom till Lidingö Tidning i tisdags för att göra mina program så blev jag gratulerad för att jag varit med på TV i måndags. Ursäkta min förvåning sa jag då, var och när då?? Det visade sig att jag tydligen varit i bild med Vikingarna i programmet med Anders Lundin och reklamprogrammet för kommande Allsång På Skansen. Kul!

Inte nog med detta…….. Lidingö Tidning presenterade mig med text och bild på två hela sidor i mitten av tidningen. Det var Jonas Jönsson, journalist på LT, som var hos mig för någon tid sedan för en intervju. Så här mycket reklam i samma vecka har jag inte fått på åratal. Känner mig rätt stolt faktiskt!

Det ser ut att bli en fin festival! Beträffande publiceringen så sätter jag endast in hemsidesadressen till de countryfestivaler som hör av sig till mig. Något annat har jag inte plats för och känner att jag måste vara lite försiktig fortsättningsvis.  Jag har  nyligen blivit hotad av en journalist från Örebro med en anmälan för att jag använt hans skrivna material som en artist skickade till mig per email.  Nu publicerade jag endast artistens hemsidesadress och inte själva texten, så ansvaret lär ligga hos denna. Men det här får till följd att jag fortsättningsvis är lite mer försiktig med vad jag använder för material i mitt Nyhetsbrev. Det kan bli så att jag helt enkelt måste sluta med mina Nyhetsbrev.  JL.

Han vet också hur man tar sig runt där utan bil (något jag själv aldrig skulle klara) och hans upplevelser är värda att läsa om. En bra skola för er som tänker er en resa till Nashville framöver. Hacienda Brothers - a pleasant surprice...

After two days of just relaxing in Nashville and no live concerts it was
time for saturday the 21st to arrive. I spent some time out in Madison
in the morning to look at a large sidewalk sale... they sold everything,
cds, albums, vhs, dvds, comics etc... out in the open air, and was the sun
shining (?) yes, almost 80 degrees yesterday.... Inside the shop they
had 20% off on all prices... so I found me some...nice items...

Best find on this trip is and odd vinyl albym by no other than Faron Young.
It's on the Nashville label SHADOW HILL SH 1100 - All-Time Favorites...
I have never seen that before and it was issued in 1983. A good find for
the record collector...

After a nice late Arby lunch with mozzarella sticks and a super Arby roast
beef
sandwich... it was time to slowly walk in the sunshine to Tower Records
on West End Avenue. I enjoyed the blooming magnolias on the left side and
stopped to smell the nice flavor, also saw some blooming chestnut trees and
some butterflies... After the walk I browsed the stuff at the record shop
and noticed that Elizabeth Cook did the same...few specials.. and old Johnny
Cash movie on DVD for $5,99... most new cds are about $17,99 or little bit
less for the unknowns like $14,99..

Elizabeth started singing at 17.00 and did have the same backing as last two
times.
Fiiddle was prominent, but no steel in the band, did only songs from new
album,
but in very good form and nice looking... After the show she signed albums,
but
I handed her the swimsuit cover of Scene instead and she kindly signed that
although she felt a little bit odd about it... only five days left she
commented,
as the Nashville Scene is a free weekly paper you can find anywhere and it
comes
out on Thursdays.

Took a short walk to Exit/In and waited in the sun listening to the radio
on my combined cd/radio player... at 19.00 the show started with an
unannounced Eric Heatherly... once he was "Swimming in Champagne"
but now he seems lost... should have had one release out the other year
on DREAMWORKS, but I guess it got released on KOCH instead... he
was just singing with guitar... one hell of a picker, but not so hard core
country in the songs.... at least some liked him, but some never knew
who he was...

About 19.30 it was time for Hacienda Brothers, a taken name from a honky
tonk in Tucson, AZ. The raucous new combo is composed of the Paladin's
guitarist/singer Dave Gonzales and Cold Hard Facts front man/Dave Alwin
sideman
Chris Gaffney. This turned out to be a good show and the main interest, from
my point of view, was the frantic steel player: David "DB' Berzansky. He
played
a nice SHOBUD and in the old way like Lloyd Green on "Or Is It Love" an old
Paycheck song from the LITTLE DARLIN' period... top sound... however no
fiddle, but Dave could really handle the guitar and singer Gaffney was in
good
form. This time the steel guitar really sounded loud, which is not often the
case in this "drum and bass mix" place...

They have a fairly new release on KOCH 9842 - Hacienda Brothers. It has
14 songs and "DB' is playing on it but also another steelie: Chris
Lawerence.
Joe Ely has called them "perfect", I wouldn't go that far but a pleasant
surprice...

Later in the evening Stonewall Jackson had them as guests on the Midnight
Jamboree, where they sang two songs live, however not as good as the gig
at Exit/In. I heard that they were about to recond album number two...
so I'll have another to look forward to..

The show ended after about an hour, but when I read my timetables for the
buses I noticed both buses #3 and #7 had stopped their service but the
#25 Midtown Connector was still running so I caught that about 20.40 and
got downtown to cath bus #15 to Midway motel where I arrived 21.27...
nice. Spent the evening listening to the Grand Ole Opry... Erika Jo made
her Opry debut... she won the NASHVILLE STAR Talent search 2005...
some chips and cheesedip tasted good with the cold soda...

Slept a good nights sleep and listened to the country countdown on WSIX
radio, noticed that Joe Diffie had his first mega hit as a WRITER, now for
Jo Dee Messina, who was number one this week.. "My Give A Damn's Busted"..
for 2nd week in a row...

Took a ride downtown where I spent some time at Ernest Tubb's record
shop and then took a walk to Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, where
I was about to be entertained by Chris Scruggs. If you follow the reports
from me you SHOULD be familiar with this guy, playing a FENDER lapsteel
from 1950 and making a Rosie Flores show so much more perfect in february..

He used to be in the group BR-549... now he has left them and he told
us that he was just back from Europe, where he had played with his mother,
Gail Davies... He sat at the hall of Fame with his steel telling stories
about
the instrument and we could all ask questions and come with requests...
like mine: "play little bit like Ralph Mooney" and he did... and explained
everything
about the instrument the the tunings and about how the pedal steel guitar
was developed...

After the more than one hour show he kindly signed my two items I had
brought
with me, the first: his own cd "Honky Tonkin' Lifestyle" released by himself
in a
limited edition of 2.000 copies... nice album (that will be re-released in
Europe by
PROPER), and second the Moot Davis cd where Chris Scruggs is playing:
electric
standard guitar AND steel guitar. He didn't even have a copy of that album
so he
signed it "Top Secret". Nice gesture... I wished him the best and hoped that
maybe
he would record more hard core honky tonk...in a not too distant future..

Then I took the short walk to the library and checked up on the emails and
wrote this report... Will probably go back to Hall of Fame...

Surprise at The Station Inn....

First I must let ya all know that the SOUND at Tower Records were
far better than the sound at Exit/In... and that's funny, since Tower
is a record store and not a "real" live music place! Hats off to the
engineers at Tower! Some info I missed to pass on from Elizabeth:

Monday 23/5 - Spent a lot of time "Window Shopping" on Gallatin Rd.
Took bus #26 all the way out to Rivergate Mall. Spent some time at
MediaPlay and found out they had a book and cd sale - new stuff for
as low as 50 cents a piece... of course no hard core stuff...

After that long day it was time for the Arby treat - a nice dinner with
Super Roast Beef Burger, curly fries and Coke for $3,99 plus tax, a grand
total of $4,26... that's a little bit better than McDonald's in Sweden...

Took a nice walk in the Music Row area and strolled around in the nice
weather... ended up in The Great Escape shop on Broadway... Had
a date with Dan Ekback at 20.45, when he quit his hard work at
Bluewater Music, for a nice evening together at the world famous
Station Inn (www.stationinn.com). After a very short ride in Dan's
car we entered the place and paid the regular fee of $7 to see the
sort of house band: The Time Jumpers.... a very good Western
Swing band with 2 cds released on independent label.

Tonight they were at least 11 persons on the stage... to mention
some: Ranger Doug-guitar and Too Slim-doghouse bass (from Riders In The
Sky),
John Hughey-steel, Joe Spivey, Kenny Sears and Aubrey Haynie-fiddle,
Andy Reiss-electric guitar, and Dawn Sears-vocal. They did a nice first set
mixed instrumentals with nice vocals. We sipped on our beers and enjoyed
the evening very much. Dan hadn't met Dawn since 4 years ago so they were
happy to meet again and exchanged their addresses...

After the break they made some remarks from the stage about people
attending the event, some were married for 25 years, and Dan & me from
SWEDEN. There were two Grand Ole Opry regulars in the audience...

Dawn told us that there was a songwriter in the audience who wanted her
to sing a nice country song and Dawn sang: "Leavin' And Sayin' Goodbye"..
Now the hard core honky tonkers and Faron Young fans knew immediately
who the writer was... and she enjoyed their version very much.

Time for the writer's older brother to enter the stage playing guitar... his
name was Bernie... and now the Star entered the stage...
She wanted to do the old Kitty Wells song "It Wasn't God Who Made
Honky Tonk Angels" and the band played it so well and everybody loved her.
We asked for one more and now she did a strong version of the ole Ernest
Tubb classic "Waltz Across Texas"... of course good harmonies by Dawn...

Answer to the surprise: Seely! After the two sets I bought a copy of Dawn
Sears 2002 cd that she produced herself and she wrote her signature and
Thanks to Hank.... Dan and I left the building and I ended up in my Midway
motel room again. A nice day and very good music with a good mix you could
hear all instruments and vocal... could hear all words to the songs etc...
Strongly recommended venue... Janne is right! We all know that.

For the craving country fans planning a trip to USA... in september 1st--4th
at the Millennium Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri, it's the annual Steel Guitar
Convention. check the page: www.scottysmusic.com. On friday night they
will have the following band: Johnny Cox-steel: Bobby Flores-vocal, fiddle;
Junior Knight-guitar; Jim Loessberg-drums; Billy Linneman-bass.. what a
show that will be... are you goin' this year too, Janne?

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard had a new album together. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: “Patriotic Country 2” is set for June 14 release and contains tracks by Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, Buddy Jewell, Lonestar, Tracy Lawrence, Darryl Worley, Chely Wright, Hank Williams Jr., Phil Vassar, Aaron Tippin, Oak Ridge Boys, Billy Ray Cyrus, Alabama, John Conlee and Elvis Presley. The album is to raise awareness for the Armed Services YMCA, a charity supporting the families of junior enlisted military personnel.

QUESTION: My granddad used to sing a song about “a boll weevil.” He said it was on the radio back in the late 1940’s. Do you have any information on such a song?

ANSWER: “Boll Weevil” was the flipside of Tex Ritter’s 1948 number 9 hit, “Rye Whiskey.”

QUESTION: Back in the 60’s there was a song on the radio by a girl singer about “I love you more than you need”. Do you know her name and the correct title?

ANSWER: “I’ll Love You More Than You Need” was Jeannie Seely’s 5th chart single. It peaked at # 10 in 1967 and was on the charts for 15 weeks.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to Loretta Lynn, her hit duet with Conway Twitty, “As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone,” was a success because the song was “real.”

Loretta says that a lot of people could and did identify with that song because they too had received the much dreaded “dear john” letter over the phone from their husband or wife or boyfriend or girlfriend.

In the liner notes of one of his and Loretta’s duet albums, Conway explained the plan and the philosophy for releasing the Conway/Loretta duet singles and albums.

Conway noted that both he and Loretta and MCA Records recognized the importance of keeping their duet singles and albums from having to compete with his and Loretta’s solo releases. That’s why there was only one Loretta/Conway single and album released each year.

“As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone” was recorded March 7^th, 1973, one day after the recording session for “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”

“Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man” was released first, which meant that “As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone” would gather dust on the shelf until the following year.

According to Loretta, Conway’s part on the record sounded like it was done over the telephone-because it was! He recorded his part of the song from a telephone booth placed inside the recording studio.

“As Soon As I Hang Up The Phone” made the country music charts June 15^th, 1974 and quickly claimed the number one spot where it stayed for only one week.

It was on the charts for 15 weeks.

As most of you know, I asked for feedback about what you thought of the ACM awards show. I spotted some what I called rather deceitful Milli Vanilli shenanigans and just wanted to see if I was the only one who spotted them.

Well. Travis Toy, the incredible steel guitarist for Patty Loveless and Rascal Flatts, spilled the beans on the steel guitar forum and proved that what many of you guessed was true. Most of the music that you heard, if not all, was pre-recorded in the studios by different musicians than who you saw performing on the tube. Many of you in your emails, said that you heard the steel players bar going up the neck but what you saw was the steel guitar bar going down the neck. This is a pretty good clue that what you're seeing is not what you're hearing. At least the singers knew where to come in on their pre-recorded tracks, unlike Ashley Simpson on Saturday Night Live. It appears that country music USA today, is following in pop and rocks footsteps. In other words, what you're paying to see and hear, is not what you're getting. But who knows, it might be better!

This is like the star artist saying he has a new release coming out next week and it's coming in at number fifteen on the charts. You may ask how it's number fifteen on the charts and it hasn't even been released. Well friends, that's the way the music business works. The record companies pay for their slots before the record is even released. Yes, there is a chance that an artist can have a number one record and never sell over 6000 units. All is not what it seems in the music promotion business.

The show in Chattanooga this weekend was again a show that one would remember forever. Some of the greatest players in the business, not playing like they were in a jazz or speed contest, but playing beautiful, tasteful, great country music and the backup band was better than it had ever been before. The was a time during my set when the four four shuffle they were playing sounded like the greatest, biggest, richest Nashville recorded four four track I had ever heard.

There were some players that I felt had the equipment to get a better tone than they got. This made me think about all the harping on the steel guitar forum about tone being in the hands. Well, I will have to admit here and now that if some of these great players who played what they played so well, would have done some things differently with their right hand picking technique, their tone could have been much better. It seems as though even some of the greatest may possibly be interested in what they're playing instead of how they're playing it.

The Good Tone video (go to www.steelguitar.net/videos.html and it's the last video at the bottom of the page) that I put out a while back could be very valuable to people who may not even think they need it. A player getting bad tone is kind of like someone having bad breath. You really do want to tell him about it but if you do, he's going to get mad. It's really not that hard, getting good tone is really about just changing a few small things in your right hand technique.

This is a lot cheaper than buying new guitars and amps. You can even make a bad guitar sound good at times by doing what this tape shows you how to do. And with good equipment, you can be there with all the other kings of tone. Learning how to get a good tone is much more important than learning a fast lick that you can only use occasionally or learning how to play a song that you may only play once a week. Every time you sit down and every note you play, you can use good tone. It will be more important to the people you're playing for than anything else you're playing.

Compliments. These are very valuable things to get and to give. Some people have a very hard time receiving them. They don't know how to take a compliment. You could walk up to a player and tell them how much you enjoyed something that they did or how much you enjoyed their playing, they may suddenly get very quiet, look down at the floor and change the subject or worse. Taking a compliment is an art. How you respond to a compliment is very important. I feel you should smile, look the person directly in the eye and say "Thank you very much." as you reach out to shake their hand. If you want to add a little humor to show that you've taken it well, you can respond with something like "I appreciate your great taste in music." Then be sure to laugh to let them know you were kidding.

A lot of people have trouble giving a compliment also. If you give a compliment to an enemy, you may loose an enemy and gain a friend. If you think somebody did a good job on anything they did, whether on a live show or on a recording, don't hold back. Walk up to them, hold your hand out, look them right in the eye and say "That was a good job". Don't be namby-pamby about it and don't look down at the floor when you're giving a compliment. Let him know you really mean it. It costs nothing to give a compliment and you may reap some rewards that you didn't know were available. But of course, don't give them if you don't mean them.

If you don't compliment somebody on a job well done, they may secretly feel that you don't know good from bad or that you just don't care one way or the other and of course, if you don't care one way or another, why should they? If somebody plays a great solo, let them know you appreciated it. If you play a great solo on stage and somebody comes up to you on break, you know how much you'd think of them if they brought it up and complimented you on it.

There last three paragraphs can be some of the most important advise I could ever give you. Remember me talking a while back about politics being more important in getting work than what you play? Think about this. Know how to take and give a compliment.

Apropå den argsinta journalisten från Örebro: är det månne någon från (no name)? Vi har nämligen också drabbat samman med dom ang. att vi tar material från dem till våra lokala nyheter. Dom lider av någon form av hybris, mycket lustigt för all reklam är väl bra reklam?

Vi har tät kontakt med Mittradion i Jämtland och där slåss dom två lokala tidningarna om att radion ska ta lokala nyheter ur just deras tidning, så olika kan det vara.

Hi, I'm back again with a report from Tuesday 24/5...

"Choices" revisited - always the same hard task....

Spent yesterday doin' some shoppin' during the day. I donated a
paper bag of english books to a Salvation Army store (had brought
them with me from Sweden, they might do more good here).
... and I was immediately rewarded (maybe by God) and found one
hell of a cd: Eric Agnew - CRY CACTUS RECORDS - "No Limits" from
2001 - Robby Tuner produced and played steel, Steve Thomas-fiddle
and Eddie Dunbar-bass/vocals. However 9 tracks only... but I only
paid $0,99... two extremely good songs "By George" and "Possession"..

Had a meeting with my promo man in the afternoon and found me
some good ones, mostly local yokals, but also a promo by Paulette
Carlson... remember her ??? what a voice!

Dan was going to Douglas Corner Cafe to see among others Donna Ulisse,
but I had my ears open to 3rd & Lindsleys show "Night Cattle Call"
featuring The John Cown Band (Cowan used to be lead singer in New
Grass Revival & later on Sky Kings) John has got great pipes and now he
uses his powers primarely for bluegrass... Guest: Robbie Fulks...

The show was listed to start 20.00 but then they just rehearsed... about
21.00 The John Cown Band came on: Wayne Benson-mandolin; Chad Cobb-
fiddle, Jeff Autry-guitar and a guy from Chicago on banjo... John, of
course,
played his bass... (even at this venue the bass sound was too loud, but at
least we didn't have drums tooo...)

Autry did "Foothills" from his album... And John did "Tomorrow Morning",
"Give Me Water" (Sam Cooke hit in '54) "Bristol Town" written by Fulks.
and "I Hope You Think Of Me Too' and some more.... I was kinda gettin'
tired... when was Fulks gonna come on....

Noticed in the public... Chris Scruggs (unfortunately he did not sit in...)
and Gail Davies, who later sang harmony with Fulks on a couple of songs.

At 22:08, finally, time for Robbie Fulks... he started out with a Jimmy Martin
tribute: "Love ' Em And Leave ' Em"... then "Little Jeannie" and a song from
his "green album" as he called it... then a solid instrumental bluegrass all the way..
then he did a fantastic prison song from his 2nd album..

He showed off his Shania T-shirt and made his belly muscles work where her
breast were to make them move... the audience loved it... he did a parody
song he'd written on the plane... "He's Not Just A Pretty Face" to a Shania melody...
then another solid instrumental... He sang Milsap's "Pure Love" with Gail on harmony
and followed with "She Took A Lot Of Pills And Died" a very good song, and frantic vocal.
another instrumental followed... then the show should have been over
if not for the public response.... ENCORES ENCORES...

He did a request "Don't Bury Me On the Mountain"... and John did "Some Old Day"
a duet with a local female in the audience... thus adding the "Fear Factor" in there... nice...

An extra fiddle played came up and jammed a Bob Wills' tune with all in the band
featured heavily on their instruments.... fantastic sound... though too much bass...
about 23.17 I had to leave to catch the bus on Murfreesboro Road. The band was
figuring out another melody then to close the show with.... about 8 minutes
later I was home in my Midway motel... had some coffee and cake before I slowly
drifted off to sleep...

So did I make the right choice, I don't know... talked with another friend this
morning he'd been to a benefit concert yesterday where the likes of the following
majors had appeared: Jeff Bates, Wade Hayes, Trent Willmon and Lee Ann Womack..
but sometimes you don't know nothing in advance.... still I think that the $10 I paid
was well worth my show... and the beer was just $3,25 a bottle....

Fulks has a new album out on YEP ROC - Georgia Hard. His best since 1997's "South Mouth"
It's not alternative but COUNTRY... however no songs from that featured on the show.

Howdy folks,    A Small World -

Wednesday May 25th, a nice day. Started the day at Ernest Tubb's record shop.
Secured a couple of Bluegrass Unlimited... and then about 11.30 I started waiting
in line for the Miranda Lambert appearance sponsored by WSIX at Country Music
Hall of Fame. It's quite funny how small the world is... one of my dealers, Ricky, who
I have never met before. But I found out he was sitting next to me on the front row...
we had met during the week at record shops but never knew we had done business
on the net. He once beat me to the new Kyle Jennings cd...

However, Miranda is a so called "one record wonder", but I know better than that.
She's from Lindell, TEXAS and has been into the music business for quite a while...
She released her independent album on HEARTFAIR - Texas Pride in 2000, It has
a good sound with Milo Deering on steel/fiddle... That's a hard-to-get now, last
time I saw it auctioned off on the net, it went for $150,- so I'm glad to already have
it in my collection since it was released. When she signed for big SONY they made
her stop selling that record. It was in the contect...

She was up to par and did an accoustic set with guitar and Scotty Wray was helping
out on guitar too, sometimes playing slide... She did mostly songs from her brand
new EPIC release "Kerosene"... with the exception of John Prine's "Angel From
Montgomery", which she had heard live with Gretchen Wilson... Of course she did
her hit song "Me And Charlie Talkin'" She was so glad her album had gone #1, as not
many new artists will never experience that with their first major label release...

She did one encore and choose "A Greyhoud Bound For Nowhere"... after that she
signed 8x10 pictures and cd's etc... Of course I got mine signed, this time "Texas As
Hell".... some of you might one day understand why....

In the afternoon I had hopes of meeting my promo man again but although I was
sitting on Music Row enjoying the new Nashville Scene and the sun, he never appeared
and after an hour I gave up and had the regular Arby's meal on West End Avenue...

Did some time again at the library with all computers... and surfed the net and learned
about shows etc... At 18.30 I went down to Legends Corner, next to the Ryman
Auditorium on 5th/Broadway. It was time for Mike Siler & Short Notice Band.
This time John Hughey wasn't there instead he had Joe Wright on steel and he had
played for Charlie Pride earlier so Mike sang a Charlie Pride song.. the show is free,
they're playing for tips only... you can drink some beer, I took the Miller Light for $3,50.
Mike is pure Texas Honky Tonk... drums, bass, lead, steel & fiddle....
His bassman sings the songs Mike doesn't remember.... lots of Faron, Bush, Hag etc songs...
He played 2 hours before the took a break and then about one hour more. So I really can remooend him.
I see him every time here in Nashville, he's usually singing there on wednesdays... if you're interested
in cd's he's selling all three at the show.... you can also visit www.mikesiler.com...

After the show it was a smooth ride home to Midway with Dan. He took a walk during
the break and found a guy from Sveriges Radio doing interviews on Broadway for P3...
so Dan got interviewed too... it's a small world....

QUESTION: I heard on the radio that a new Marty Robbins album has been released. DOoyou have any information?

ANSWER: “The Essential Marty Robbins” contains 40 songs spanning his 30 year career and is set for June 28^th release by Legacy Records.

QUESTION: What was the name of the guy who had the hit record of “This Ole House” back in the 50’s and whatever happened to him?

ANSWER: Stuart Hamblen wrote the song and had a # 2 hit on “This Ole House” in 1954. Hamblen died in 1989

QUESTION: Back in the 60’s there was a song on the radio by a couple about “Don’t Call Me >From The Honky Tonk.” Do you know who they were?

ANSWER: “Don’t Call Me From A Honky Tonk” was the first chart single for Johnny & Jonie Mosby-who were husband and wife from 1958-1973. The song peaked at # 13 in 1963.

QUESTION: I head that Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton are on some kind of special new TV program. Do you have any information?

ANSWER: Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson are part of the artist lineup to tape the CMT 100 Greatest Duets concert on June 8th in Nashville, Tennessee. The taping will feature live performances of the Top 12 songs, and the program will air on CMT in September. Other artists include Kenny Rogers, Trace Adkins, Montgomery Gentry, Clint Black, Lisa Hartman Black, Lee Ann Womack, Joe Nichols, Shooter Jennings, Raul Malo, Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Crystal Gayle, Travis Tritt, Marty Stuart and Rebecca Lynn Howard.

QUESTION: My uncle used to sing a song about “The Spell Of The Freight Train.” He said it was on the radio by Charley Pride many years ago. Do you know anything about such a song or recording?

ANSWER: “Spell Of The Freight Train” was the flipside of Charley Pride’s 1967 number four hit, “Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger?”

QUESTION: I was watching one of the old Porter Wagoner TV shows on satellite and Porter sang a song about “I’ve Enjoyed More Than I Can Stand” ….or something like that. Did he ever record that song and if so when?

ANSWER: “I’ve Enjoyed As Much Of This As I Can Stand” was Porter’s 15^th chart single. It peaked at # 7 in 1962 and was on the charts for 15 weeks.

This a response to the post on the forum where several people were asking the question "Who is Arnold Nelson?"

Most forumites suspected that he was a great player from yesteryear. So I went on a search to see if Arnold Nelson was still around and to get some history on the man, the player and the guitar.

My search did bear fruit! I found that Arnold Nelson was a very well known western swing steel guitarist in the Vancouver, BC area throughout the 50's and 60's and was one of the youngest recipients ever of a custom built 3 neck Bigsby guitar. His life was touched by such great players as Joaquin Murphy, Noel Boggs, Tom Morrell and several of the great western swing players.

Following is a letter I received from Arnie, after pressuring <requesting> he and his lovely wife Nancy, for information on his past.

Hi Bobbe,
I mentioned earlier I would tell you about some encounters I had with
Noel Boggs and Joaquin Murphy, along with a few others. In early 1948
the Spade Cooley big band appeared in Vancouver. Noel was playing a
four-neck Fender and with Jimmy Wyble and another guitarist they played
some great three guitar stuff, including Boggs Boogie. After the
show I introduced myself to Noel, and he was kind to give this 14-year old kid
the time of day. I mentioned I planned to be in Los Angeles in the
summer. He encouraged me to visit him at the Spade Cooley TV show at
The Santa Monica ballroom on the pier. When I showed up that summer it
turned out that I required a guardian since I was under-aged to be in a
liquor serving venue. Noel told the powers that be he would be my
guardian, and make sure I behaved myself. Was I thrilled or not? He
was just a great friendly person. I met with him again in 1955, but
more about that later.
Tex Williams' Western Caravan with Joaquin also played Vancouver later
in 1948. I can't say I really met him. He was, I think, a shy man of
few words. It was my first look at a Bigsby and I remember he had his
name engraved on a silver-plated plaque. Tex Williams was very nice
and posed for a picture with me and two others.
At this time, I was fooling around with a 6-string Hawaiian laptop
(Gibson), and Jimmy Wakely's guitarist, Jack Rivers, sold me his Fender
amp after a gig in Vancouver (The first Fender amp in Canada I believe).
With that amp the sound wasn't too bad, but with only 6 strings I
couldn't begin to try and emulate what Boggs and Murphy turned out.
Not long after I decided I needed more firepower and contacted Paul
Bigsby. At first I think he was skeptical that I was serious about
ordering a guitar, let alone if I could afford to pay for it. So he
combined a motorcycle trip to meet with me in Vancouver, and then do
some fishing. I convinced him I was serious and he put me in his order
book. He started work in 1951 and delivered in early 1952.
In 1954/55 I appeared in a TV series on the CBC network. I was also attending university.
The summer of 1955 saw me staying for several weeks in Manhattan Beach CA.
The Noel Boggs quartet was playing at a club/lounge in West Hollywood,
so I got to renew our acquaintance over a couple of nights at the club.
I learned Joaquin was playing at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood.
Others in the band were Billy Strange, Phil Gray (trombone), and one of
the Morgan brothers on bass are the ones I remember. During a break
Joaquin and I headed to the parking lot to see the love of his life, a
brand new jet black VW bug. He was excited also that he could get all
his gear into it, how I wondered. My brand new Buick convertible
didn't impress him at all. After the break it was determined Billy Strange
was in no condition to carry on (too much grape), and I was asked to
step in with his guitar. So there I was playing alongside Joaquin. A
night I cannot forget!
Last month we spent two weeks in Hawaii, arriving one day after Jerry
Byrd passed away on April 11th. His passing was big news in the
Honolulu papers. I met him in the 70's when he was playing one of the
Waikiki hotels. He had a very nice style in both country and Hawaiian.
Other steel players I've met include Vance Terry (Billy Jack Wills),
Wayne Burdick (Tex Williams), and Tom Morrell, and I'm so sorry he is
not well. And soon I look forward to meeting Bobbe Seymour.
One last note: From 1987-1991 I lived and worked in New York City.
Every Monday night the Les Paul trio performed at a Lounge/Club in
Lower Manhattan. The fact that we both knew Paul Bigsby enabled me to join
him for a drink. He was using a Bigsby tremolo.
I have met a number of other musicians and entertainers of renown, and
will send an e-mail later describing such.
In the meantime, we are planning to be in Nashville in early October
with the hope that this will be convenient for you.

I want to thank Arnold Nelson for being one of those players who cares enough to share his memories of the early days of this great instrument with us. As the history of this instrument slowly fades into the past, it's these great players who lived steel guitar history first hand, that we need to be listening closely to today.

I especially like the part where Arnold relates that Paul Bigsby didn't know if a 15 year old boy was serious or not when he ordered a triple neck guitar and had to ride his motorcycle to Vancouver just to check Arnie out. Paul then immediately proceeded back to Downey, CA and put Arnold's name on the list. A year and a half later, Arnie was playing the same brand and configuration of instrument that his idols, the best steel players of the day, were playing.

Remember this, my fellow players, some of the greatest steel players in the world don't use pedals or knee levers, and don't play Hawaiian and don't play corny sounding country. Noel Boggs, Joaquin Murphy and Tom Morrell were all great non-pedal players. Hej magistern!

DCMC, Dalarnas Country Music Club, nedkom lyckligen med sitt 30-årspartaj i
Säter den 28 maj (se http://www.countrysweden.com/dcmc/manadsbrev.asp )
med Mats Rådberg som huvudnummer - och det blev klart uppskattat av publiken!
I övrigt var det lokala band som uppträde, men det finns rätt många såna
som låter riktigt bra numera, så det var inget problem att hitta.
Klubbens jamansvarige Tommy Backström har jobbat som bägge Bröderna Bäver
samtidigt med det här arret, och utan honom hade det inte gått att genomföra.

Vi började redan kl 16 för att inte avskräcka vanliga familjer som inte har
sena vanor, och det inhyrda fiket blev taget på sängen av att massor av
folk strömmade till så tidigt - de var inte beredda på det, eftersom folk
brukar komma betydligt senare på vanliga parningsdanser.

Allt lät och gick bra, och arret gick INTE med förlust (tänka sig!). Det kom
ungefär 300 pers och det innebar att det gick jämt ut, och det känns förbålt
skönt! Hur det än är, så är även ett så här blygsamt evenemang en ekonomisk
risk av rang för en liten förening, och lättnaden över utebliven ekonomisk
förlust var nog lika stor som tillfredsställsen att se folk ha trevligt
till bra musik och att lyssna till den själv.


II: Så till sura journaliser:
Det är fullt OK att citera delar av en text och/eller
att göra ett eget sammadrag av den med egna ord. Gör så i stället, för säkerhets skull.
Orsaken till att den här saken är så viktig är att det länge har varit
en infekterad kamp om rättigheter till journalisters texter - arbetgivarsidan
vill ha rätt att tjäna pengar på att sprida texter var och hur som helst
utan någon som helst extra ersättning till upphovsmännen, och har lett till
många hårda ord och känslor från skribenter som känner sig utnyttjade och
missbrukade av maktfullkomliga skitstövlar som bara stjäl deras arbete och
säljer till arbetsgivarkollegor och lägger ut på hemsidor och trycker i
andra tidningar. Det ökar förtjänsten för medieägarna men inte för dom som
gör jobbet och skriver texterna, så nu är det här en riktigt het potatis.

Vi skulle behöva några Bröderna Bäver i Stockholm också, men dessvärre finns de inte här. Stan är nästan död beträffande countrymusik och det enda som händer är lite countrydisco och att en och annan singer/songwriter kommer hit och kallar sin musik country. Jättekul!

Grattis till en lyckad 30-årsfest! Jag skulle såklart varit där, men jag hade dessvärre annat för mig just den här helgen. Mats och Rankarna fick sköta Stockholmsinslaget den här gången och det brukar de göra ganska bra. Okej då, Sterling brukar fastna med fingrarna mellan strängarna då det blir för "hot", men ändå…..! Så går det då man spelar på en Emmons!

Tack för en fin förklaring varför journalister ibland kan te sig lite griniga. I det här fallet med mitt Nyhetsbrev så hade killen inte tagit reda på vad det handlade om. Han trodde förstås att hans text fanns i mitt brev, men så var det inte den här gången. Det gäller att man först  tar reda på vad det handlar om och sedan kastar stenarna och inte tvärtom. JL.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

According to Dorsey Dixon Jr., his dad wrote “Wreck On The Highway” in 1936. The new Ford automobiles had come out with V8 engines which was much more power that people were used to and more people were killed in automobile wrecks because of it.

Dixon commented, “The wreck that the song was written about happened in front of the Triangle Filling Station in Rockingham, North Carolina. My dad went down there to see the wreck and said he couldn’t help but notice the blood, whiskey and broken glass on the floor of the cars. One was a local car and the other was from out of town. My dad even knew some of the people involved in the wreck. He wrote the song about that wreck and he titled it, “Crash On The Highway.” When Roy Acuff recorded it, he changed the title to “Wreck On The Highway.”

Acuff’s version was never a hit record but it was popular on the radio and on Acuff’s stage performances.

Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper had a number 8 hit on the song in 1961. It was their 7^th chart single and was on the charts for seven weeks.

Svenska Country & Westernklubben har som vanligt sänt mig Krutstänket, deras medlemstidning. Tack Christina Birgell, alltid lika läsvärd. I detta nummer kan man läsa om många av sommarens festivaler. Mycket informativt!  Det är kul att se att många festivaler i år satsar på svenska band. Har mitt tjatande kanske givit resultat? Kanske finns det ändå hopp för att countrymusiken ska överleva i vårt land. Kan man sedan till nästa år renodla festivalerna till att bli riktiga countrymusikfestivaler så blir åtminstone jag nöjd. Hi, I'm back again with a report from Thursday May 26...

Lance Miller revisited - Still honky tonkin' in Nashville

I spent some time at library and went to some record shops,
buying Robbie Fulks new one, Lloyd Green-steel, and
even a fiddle player... Found some dvd's Hank Williams
and Dolly Parton... later on yesterday I went to the Douglas
Corner Cafe on 8th Avenue South. You can easily access their
homepage on the net, they publish their schedules there...

So at 18.00 I was there to see a free set with new coming
artist Kristi Miller.... playing mandolin herself and with two
regular guitar friends... and a bass man. She did country
with a bluegrass twist... a nice version of the old Loretta standard
"You Ain't Woman Enough"... She also had her guitar men
featured.. and then sang "Wrecklessly" and "Lying In Your
Loving Arms Again" and a nice vocal version of 'Wildwood Flower".
After the show she gave me her demo and signed it, I noticed
she remembered that Randy Kohrs played steel on that, and also
a fiddle player named Adam... I listened to it during the break,
a nice record, hopefully picked up by some label...

Then it was a long break as the next thing would be a
Stroke Benefit Show.... put together by Teresa Wade... who
was plaing guitar and piano... and will have a cd released
probably in July... the show was like a writers gathering
"round in the pond"... however this time it was on the line.
First were: Teresa, Charlie Stefl, Steve Dean and Jim Wolf.
All backed by their own guitars...
Steve has written some hits like "Southern Star" (for Alabama)
and "Right About Time" (for Strait) he sang these and "Fast Trains
and Country Roads". Jim Wolf sang songs from his cd "Songs
You'll Never Hear On The Radio Volume 2" and I can understand
why, they were on the odd side... for me depressing.. Charlie sang
a song being recorded by Del McCoury & Band and he likes them
a lot, nice writer and song.

Donations for the show was $10. Time for last line-up:
Michael Peterson, Jen Schott, Bryan White, Lance Miller, Don Ellis...
Michael sang a Buffet-influenced song " King Of The Beach", and a song that
Ty Herndon has recorded, and a song about his hero Dan Fogelberg, whose
album "Netherlands" inspired M.P. to be a song writer...
Jen was a good singer writer, like a fresh Emmylou... had a cut "In A Little Town"
with Lonestar. Nice looking and good songs, started her career in the recption of an office...
Bryan sang a song that Trace Adkins was about to record and some other rather funny songs...
Don Ellis played piano and didn't leave much for me to remember...
TOP OF THE BILL: Lance did three songs in a Lefty Frizzell vocal:
"Beers Not Just For Breakfast", "George Jones & Jesus" and "You Picked Hell Of A Time
To Go Crazy", which might be a cut by Tim McGraw... He was best received by the
audience and I must say his deliverance was in another division - Honky Tonk Country.
Asked if he had any records with him but he told me just to visit his homepage,
so here it comes again: www.lancemiller.com... listen and enjoy! He's really worth it!

Now it was about 22.55 and I had to leave for bus#8 to take me downtown and then
bus #15 to Midway motel... nice coffee and cake and then sorting out things before
the big sleep hit me...

Here's the report for Friday May 26th:

The Good Time Variety Show ain't over until ..... sings!

Another wonderful day in Nashville, went to Great Escape after my hour
at the library yesterday to pick up The Grascals and found them for a
nice $9,99 and I hope to see them at Station Inn tomorrow....

Then I took bus#1 out to the flea market at the Fairgrounds. Met with
my favorite dealers, and found me some items I couldn't resist. Had some
stuff delivered that I had already ordered.

One nice find: Jimmy Melton - demo with 10 songs - solid country with good
backing and hard core vocal... good songs and writers... will check up more
on this guy before I come over next... I also bought some clothing for
my grandkid...

Then I went back to Murfreesboro road to have my regular vacuum haricut.
This thing was invented by a guy from Nashville I learned this time. So after
giving away $8 I was clean cut again...took about 6 minutes.. after some
coffee and cake in Midway motel it was about time to head downtown to
find a guy I haven't seen in about 3 years with some records on hand....
and yes I found him and I got me some local yokals....
Nicest find: a Gary Buck cd with western swing material where our friend
Darrell McCall is singing harmony...
Then I took a nice walk to Station Inn to watch this evenings show. Entrance
$7 and this time the beer was $3. Featured acts:
Chris Sharp presents The Good Time Variety Show - with a nice program folder.
Chris Sharp-guitar; Matt Combs-fiddle; Heeday Watanabe-banjo; Kevin Kehrberg-
doghouse bass; Mark Horn-drum.
Show started exactly 21.00... with Chris Sharp Band... he has records out..
and it's the bluegrass kind... after his segment it was time for Matt Kinman,
who has been a recording with O.C.M.S. - he sang in a Jimmy Rogers kinda way,
very hillbilly guy and nice sense of humor.. did also "Long Black Veil"...
Then Mark did some comedy songs with a banjo.... there were door prizes
given away during the itermission and they were also reading nice hillbilly jokes...
About 22.40 Chris Sharp Band started the 2nd part, still nice acoustic bluegrass.
One big microphone and they altered taking the solos, banjo, fiddle, guitar...
and doghouse bass.. and all sang here and there... A japanese guy in the audience
came up and played hell of a banjo, nice picking, he was a friend of Heeday's.

About 11.20 top of the bill: Elizabeth Cook... this time sounding more original
then the other 3 times I've seen her during this trip. Very much due to the
very good backing: fiddle, guitar and just one little drum and the acoustical
microphone techinal...Sound Engineer: Ryu Tashiro did a fantastic job...
This time Elizabeth started with "Storms Never Last" an old classic tune which
was well received. Then my very favorite song "Success" (once made famous
by Loretta Lynn), which I had requested... and it was her favorite too and
very nice harmony singing with Tim... Nobody but nobody more country than
Elizabeth... she closed har part with "If I Could Then I Would" a nice up tempo
song written by Tim. A very pleasant evening...

Had to take the nightowl bus to my Midway motel, but this time I got off
as 2nd so I was home about 24.27... a cup of coffee and then the big sleep..

Today Saturday I'm planning to see The Grascals at same place, Station Inn,
hopefully with good pickin' & singin'... might have a report tomorrow if there is time...
