Marty Stuart's court appearance for the drunk driving charge has been rescheduled for May 28th in Sumner County, Tennessee General Sessions Court. Marty also performed to raise money to restore the cabin birthplace of thelate A. P. Carter.

My dad's favorite country song was "Carroll County Accident." He said that Porter Wagoner wrote it and that the song won some kind of award. Do you have any information?
ANSWER:
"The Carroll County Accident" was a number two hit for Porter Wagoner in 1968. The song was written by BobFerguson and won the CMA's Song Of The Year. (Lyssna på Radio Lidingö 97,8 den 7 maj så kan du höra låten spelas)

Don't tell anyone because it's supposed to be a secret, but MCA is working on a Patsy Cline tribute album. We can expect to hear Lee Ann Womack, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Chely Wright, Trisha Yearwood and maybe Reba. Nothing's official, so the lineup will be announced later. Can't wait to hear Womack's version of "She's Got You".

JohnnyPaycheck is battling emphysema and asthma while bedridden in a nursing home. The 63-year old Paycheck has been struggling with health problems for several years. His new 23-song CD, "The Soul & the Edge: The Best of Johnny PayCheck," is set for release tomorrow. (AP)

* IBMM HAS GRAND RE-OPENING: And it was indeed grand! The festivities held at the reopening of the International Bluegrass Music Museum in Owensboro KY in April were unparalleled in excellence. The new exhibits, now occupying two floors of the museum, were fabulous in excellence and scope. Best of all, many "first generation" bluegrassers (including
Eddie Adcock) were honored with tributes and a special plaque; a good number of those folks were in attendance. Hall of Honor inductees, like Eddie Adcock, were also honored with special attentions.

NEW HALL OF FAMERS GET MEDALLION

The Country Music Hall of Fame's annual Medallion Ceremony, the occasion when new members are presented keepsake medals commemorating their inductions, will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2002, in the museum's soaring, 5,300-square-foot Hall of Fame rotunda where their likenesses are already enshrined. This is the first Medallion Ceremony to be held in the rotunda. (The March 200l ceremony honouring Charley Pride and the late Faron Young was held in the Curb Conservatory prior to the museum's opening in May and it was the first Hall of Fame event in the new building.) To be honoured are Hall of Fame Members Bill Anderson, the Delmore Brothers, the Everly Brothers, Don Gibson, Homer & Jethro (the late Homer Haynes and Ken Burns), Waylon Jennings, the Jordanaires (Gordon Stoker, Ray Walker, the late Hoyt Hawkins, and the late Neal Matthews), Don Law, the Louvin Brothers, Ken Nelson, Sam Phillips, and Webb Pierce.

BIG JIM WEBB BENEFIT

Jim Webb, who plays steel guitar for Opry star Del Reeves, has not been in good health. To help Jim and his wife with their medical bills there is to be a special benefit concert on Sunday May 19^th 1-5pm at the Texas Troubadour Theatre, Music Valley Drive, Nashville. Music will be provided by the Grand Ole Opry Staff Band. Among the singers scheduled to perform will be Stonewall Jackson, Gail Davies, Leona Williams, Del Reeves, Stu Phillips, Charlie Louvin, Jimmy C. Newman, Jan Howard, Jeannie Seely, Jean Shepard, Michael Twitty, Billy Walker, Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike and Ernie Ashworth.

3rd Annual BILL MONROE Bluegrass Festival
Has been announced for Memorial Day Weekend – May 23rd, 24th, 25th & 26th
In tribute to his father and his own lifelong love affair with bluegrass, James Monroe announced the 3rd annual Bill Monroe Bluegrass Festival to be held in Rosine, Kentucky, during the 2002 Memorial Day Weekend. The festival is considered the event of the year in the world of bluegrass — ranking with events such as the Newport Jazz Festival as a premiere destination of choice for aficionados of the music born in the hills of Kentucky. It's a fitting tribute to Bill that the event is held at the place of both his birth and final resting, and that his son James and his band are highlights of each event, forging family tie with fans of Monroe music—both new and old. The festival will feature performances by: James Monroe & the Midnight Ramblers, Rhonda Vincent, Jim & Jesse McReynolds, Larry Sparks, Sullivan Family, Gary Brewer, Dean Osborne, Eddie & Martha Adcock, Lonesome Whistle Band, Bluegrass Alliance, Cumberland Highlanders, Ronnie Reno, The Adairs, Jim Monroe, Tim Graves, Dallas Smith and more.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG

One of Elvis Presley's early hits, "I Forgot To Remember To Forget," was written by an ex-steel guitar player--who became a bass player and later overheard a restaurant conversation between two guys in which one of them was apologizing to the other for being late and said, "I'm sorry I'm late.
I just forgot to remember." Sounds like a plot for a TV movie? Maybe so--but it's all true. That is--according to Stan Kester.  Kester spent the early part of his musical career playing steel guitar on Sun Records sessions in Memphis, Tennessee But as time went by, Kester could see that Sam Phillips was turning Sun Records in a different direction-- one in which a steel guitar player would be needed less and less. So he decided to switch to the standup bass--thinking that would give him a better chance of staying on the payroll doing recording sessions! And about that same time..he started writing songs.
He had already scored with an Elvis "B" side with "I'm Left, You’re Right, She's Gone," before he overheard the "I Forgot To Remember" idea in the restaurant and decided to expand it into a song title. According to Stan, "once I sat down and began working on it, the song came together in just a few minutes."

"I Forgot To Remember To Forget" was the flipside of "Mystery Train," but entered the country charts three months before the "Train" side!
"I Forgot To Remember" entered the country music charts September 17th, 1955 and rose to number one, where it stayed for five weeks, knocking Red Sovine/Webb Pierces’ "Why Baby Why" off the top of the charts!
"I Forgot To Remember To Forget" was on the charts for 39 weeks.

The International Bluegrass Music Association is moving to Nashville, Tennessee from Owensboro, Kentucky in 2003.
The International Bluegrass Music Museum will remain in Owensboro.

On November 2nd, San Antonio's brand new state-of-the art entertainment and sports arena, The SBC Center, will celebrate its grand opening with a live performance from legendary country music superstar, George Strait. With record sales of over 57 million, 47 number one singles, and armloads of awards, George Strait is one of the most successful recording artists in history. Now the Texas native and avid Spurs fan will delight his hometown crowd as the first entertainer to grace the stage of the 18,500 seat venue.
Tickets for George Strait's live concert at The SBC Center are scheduled to
go on sale in July."It's an honor to be the first performer at the new SBC Center," said GeorgeStrait. "San Antonio is my home and I not only look forward to performing there, but also to attending Spurs games, the rodeo, and other events. It's
a great addition to our town."

Stockholms Country Music Club hade vårfest i lördags (11 maj) och bjöd på god mat och trevlig underhållning. 50-talet medlemmar dök upp och samtliga verkade att trivas. Förutom att Howling Coyotes spelade så ordnades det Karoke till allas förtjusning.  SCMCs nästa arrangemang är klubbträffen i klubblokalen den 27 maj.

Patsy tribute should be unforgettable

One of your cooler tribute albums is coming together, and it already has drawn attention from some mega-cool singers, including jazzy Diana Krall and part-time Nashvillian Natalie Cole. MCA Nashville is putting together a Patsy Cline tribute album, and word is that loads o' artists from outside Nashville have been expressing interest. Of course, that doesn't mean that there won't be a load of country artists on there, but label execs are particularly stoked that outsiders dig the concept. Posthumously, Patsy remains one of the best-selling country artists, and her greatest hits album, first released in 1967, still sells close to a million copies a year. Anything's possible with this project. There are even talks about artists doing duets using Patsy recordings, something with which Natalie Cole has experience. Using similar technology, she had a hit in 1991 with Unforgettable with her late dad, Nat King Cole.

Jerry Lee Lewis Will Divorce
Jerry Lee Lewis, 66, and his wife of 17 years, Kerrie Lewis, 39, will divorce. The two will remain business partners, and both will continue to live at their ranch in Nesbit, Mississippi, south of Memphis. Kerrie Lewis will remain as president of JKL Enterprises. She is Lewis’ sixth wife.

Songwriters Tribute to Garth Brooks
Four of country music's most accomplished songwriters Pat Alger, Tony Arata, Kent Blazy & Kim Williams, who are now based in Nashville, are about to undertake their first joint Irish tour. Each of the songwriters is also a performer in his own right and together they make up a very formidable concert package. Between them they are responsible for no less than seven of Garth Brooks Number 1 hits, among them The Thunder Rolls, Unanswered Prayers, The Dance and If Tomorrow Never Comes. All in all Garth has actually recorded 26 songs which have been written by this outstanding quartet of writers.
The tour started on Saturday May 4th in Dublin at the Holiday Inn, City Centre, They head west to Galway for a performance at the Quays Bar, Galway on Saturday May11th. Their final show will be staged at the Holiday Inn, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal on Sunday May 12th. The boys have also recorded a CD with the appropriate title In the Beginning-- A Songwriters Tribute to Garth Brooks. This album should be in the shops now and will probably be available at the concerts as well. Apart from the Garth connection, which is huge, it should also be pointed out that individually, these four songwriters over the past 25 years, are among Nashville's most accomplished and successful composers and have also worked with all the top names in the country music business among them George Jones, Merle Haggard, The Everly Bro's, Emmylou Harris, Trisha Yearwood, Kenny Chesney, Patty Loveless and Kathy Mattea. A lot of the songs they will be featuring in their act will be familiar to Irish audiences, and it will be nice to hear them as they were sung when presented to the respective stars, before they turned them into major hits.

CHESNEY ALBUM SETS PERSONAL AND LABEL RECORDS

Kenny Chesney's new album, No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems, debuts at number 1 simultaneously on the Billboard 200 and Top Country Album charts with sales of 235,316 units during its first week. In addition to being Chesney's first number 1 pop chart debut, this marks the first time that a label group has achieved two number 1 pop chart debuts for two artists' albums in the same year - calendar or otherwise. Arista Nashville recording artist Alan Jackson debuted at number 1 with his Drive disc earlier this year. The landmark debut of No Shoes, No Shirt No Problems is the first number 1 pop debut and highest first-week unit sales for BNA, which is one of RLG's three labels.  

Gaylord Entertainment, the company that owns The Grand Ole Opry, is selling
Acuff-Rose Music Publishing . The company was founded in 1942 by Roy Acuff
and Fred Rose and published songs written by Hank Williams Sr. Asking price
is reportedly over 100 million dollars.

FAN FAIR CELEBRITY ARCHERY SHOOT-OUT
The Fan Fair Celebrity Archery Shoot-Out hosted by Andy Griggs scored a bullseye list of shooting stars including Tracy Byrd, Jeff Carson, Gary Chapman, Greg Cook of Ricochet, Gary Levox of Rascal Flatts, Gary Morris, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Rusty Tabor, Neil Thrasher and Darryl Worley. The Shoot-out will be held from 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm Friday, June 14 in Lot R at Adelphia Coliseum. The event is open to the public, but parking at Adelphia Coliseum is reserved for Fan Fair attendees. Net proceeds will from the event will be given to the winning artist's charity of choice. If you don't have a pre-purchased parking pass for Adelphia, there are many public parking lots and garages available in Downtown Nashville, which is a short walk over the Woodland Street Bridge to Adelphia Coliseum.

Det nya Country Music Hall Of Fame som flyttat in till kärnan av Nashville har kostat 37 miljoner dollar att bygga. Ännu har inte "Walk Away Of Stars" flyttats dit, utan stenarna ligger fortfarande kvar på gamla stället, vilket har föranlett en del irritation. Besökarantalet på CMHoF har inte motsvarat förväntningarna, men förhoppningsvis ökar det under sommaren.

Lasse Stefanz spelar in en ny skiva och som vanligt är det mycket country på den som t ex  Merle Haggards "Today I Started Loving You Again" och Brad Paisley  "Wrapped Around". Olle Jönsson som är sångare i bandet går alltid klädd i boots, långrock och cowboyhatt. Ja, nästan som en riktig cowboy!  Undrar om han också har långkalsonger med lucka där bak?

Idag den 21 maj har Hasse Häggström öppet hus på Vallatorpsvägen 206 i Täby. Hos Hasse hittar du allt i countryväg från CD till gamla härliga vinyler. Tiden är 16.00 till 22.00 och du behöver inte ha cowboykläder för att gå dit!  

Glöm heller inte att jag själv har öppet hus den 30 maj på kvällen. Adressen är Frösätrabacken 12 i Sätra. Du kommer att få mer information om några dagar. Om du kommer cowboyklädd, får du en present!

Hej vänner!  Dags för ett nyhetsblad igen och jag hoppas att ni får ut något av det. Jag försöker att få med det jag tror är intressant för svenska countryfans. Självklart speglar de här nyhetsbreven endast en bråkdel av de jag får per epost. Jag försöker att ta ut de bästa bitarna, precis som jag gör då jag äter t ex en Brieost. Jag äter upp det mogna och godaste!

Igår måndag, hade vi klubbträff med SCMC och klubben bjöd på kaffe, dricka och mackor med massor av pålägg. Ungefär 15 medlemmar dök upp denna kväll och vi hade mycket trevligt. Medlemmar och andra får en chans till på torsdag då jag har öppet hus klockan 19.00 i Sätra. Adressen är Frösätrabacken 12 och finns på kartblad 51, 1C. Alla som har lust att komma är välkomna. Se mitt tidigare utskick angående detta!

Brooks & Dunn had tied Merle Haggard's record for the most ACM wins (15) thanks to picking up Top Video and Top Vocal Duo awards. When the Big One, Entertainer of the Year, gave them the title outright at 16 ACM wins, the duo felt it was validation and payoff for the recommitment to their career over the last couple of years.

Backstage at the Awards, Martina McBride proved once again that she has her priorities in order when it comes to career vs. family. After taking the coveted Top Female Vocalist award, Martina was whisked back stage to begin the rounds of the press. And just as she began an interview, she stopped to take a cell phone call from her two young daughters, Delaney 7 and Emma 4. They were watching the awards show on television at a friend's house in Los Angeles and, because of the tape delay, they had not seen their mother accept her award yet. When Martina told them she had won they squealed so loudly they nearly broke her phone. Martina, was extremely thrilled, herself. So much so that she took her trophy with her to the "after parties" and never let it leave her grasp.

Tänk om alla arrangörer vore lika framåt, då kanske deras festivaler skulle bli än mer lyckade rent publikmässigt. Då det gäller sommarfestivaler så tror jag att många vill veta redan i början av april vad som händer i Skandinavien. De flesta företag vill nämligen ha in semesterlistor just vid den tidpunkten. As one of the premiere dobro players in bluegrass, new-acoustic, and country music, Jerry "Flux" Douglas toured and recorded with everyone from Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to mandolin sensation David Grisman and banjo innovator Bela Fleck. Douglas' albums as a leader fully exploited the dobro's resonant guitar sound, his aggressive touch, incredibly fast finger picking and deft use of the steel bar giving the instrument a bright, cutting tone-quality.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Douglas was eight years old when his father, a bluegrass musician, introduced him to the dobro. He became further fascinated with the instrument upon hearing Josh Graves play the instrument at a 1963 Flatt & Scruggs concert. By the time he was 16, Douglas had been playing in his father's band for a number of years; when the group played at a festival alongside the Country Gentlemen, the Gentlemen were impressed with the youth's playing and invited him to join them for the rest of the summer. Later Douglas worked with J.D. Crowe and the New South as well as David Grisman, and Boone Creek with Ricky Skaggs.

In 1978, Douglas made his solo debut with Fluxology. His next album, Tennessee Fluxedo came out two years later. He began playing and recording with the Whites in 1983, and eventually left to focus on his solo career and much sought-after session work. He recorded three albums for MCA in the late 1980s, most notably 1989's Plant Early, which marked a change toward a calmer, more textured direction. In the early '90s, Douglas and guitarists Albert Lee and Tal Farlow embarked upon a European tour for the National Council of Traditional Arts; he also began producing other artists and making regular appearances on the TNN show American Music Shop. In 1993, Douglas, guitarist Russ Barenberg and bassist Edgar Meyer released the Sugar Hill album Skip, Hop & Wobble. Restless on the Farm followed in 1998. Four years went by before a new studio album was released, but in 2002 the critically-praised Lookout for Hope was dropped in May. — Sandra Brennan & Linda Kohanov

      Ett JÄTTETACK till er som kom på Evas och mitt öppna hus i torsdags! Vilken trevlig kväll det blev med sång och musik, tävling och framför allt hustru Evas fantastiska bak! Bullar och sockerkakor alltså! Speciellt tack till Caroline, Michael och Birgitta som sjöng sånger av Hank Williams, Jimmie Rodgers och en del eget material. Vi hade verkligen en härlig stund med dessa countrymusiktolkare!

     Tävlingen som handlade om Texas, vanns förstås av Susanne med full poäng. Göran Adolph, countrymusikallvetare, kom tvåa på grund av att han missade frågan om hur många invånare det bor i Luckenbach. Göran, invånarantalet är tre (3)!

     Nu blir det inget öppet hus förrän till hösten, men under sommaren blir det många festivaler som ni redan kunnat läsa om i tidigare utskick. Så förmodligen blir ert countrymusikbehov utfyllt i alla fall. En uppdaterad skandinavisk festivallista kommer snart och det är ju självklart att ni ska stödja dessa festivaler med att åka dit, speciellt de i ert närområde.

WSM Radio To feature Bluegrass

Country music stalwart WSM-AM 650 is formalizing its ties to current bluegrass music by named disc jockey Hairl Hensley to the station's newly created bluegrass music director position. WSM is expected to programme one to two current bluegrass songs each hour. The multi-million-selling success of the largely bluegrass O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack aided the station's decision-making process. The soundtrack's popularity hasn't caused most major-market country stations to programme any bluegrass, but WSM would gladly up the bluegrass ante. Hensley's pre-recorded Early Bird Gets the Bluegrass will expand to 90 minutes. But it will be downgraded in its timeslot, becoming a 4-to-5:30-a.m. lead-in to Bill Cody's morning show. Hensley's current bluegrass show, The Orange Possum Special, will continue to air 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, and he will continue his hour-long lead-in to the Friday Night Opry.

Orville Couch Passes away
Country singer Orville Couch died on May 26 in Dallas, Texas with leukaemia. He wrote and was famous for the song Hello Trouble that was a big hit in the early sixties. He was a disc jockey on KZEE (Weatherford, Texas) in 1956. A regular on the Big D Jamboree (KRLD, Dallas, Texas) in 1956 and recorded for many years on the legendary Starday label.

WANNA BUY REBA'S FARM? IT'S FOR SALE

Reba McEntire's Starstruck Farm where she lived and raised horses, is up for sale. If you have $1.8 million bucks to invest you can pick up the 48-acre spread, which includes a 15-stall horse barn complete with an office and laundry room.

Reba got out of the horse business four years ago, so only the farm is up for sale, not Reba's home in the same area. McEntire also has a home in Los Angeles where she tapes her hit TV sit-com, "Reba."

TILLIS' TRIBUTE TO TILLIS

Pam Tillis has been putting the finishing touches on a real labour of love, a tribute album to dad, MEL TILLIS, one country music's truly great singer- songwriter-humorists. The CD due out this summer is titled IT'S ALL RELATIVE. In addition to the voices of Pam and Mel, the tribute also features Emmylou Harris, Trisha Yearwood, Dolly Parton, The Jordanaires, Marty Stuart and Delbert McClinton.

Hågelbyparken
som ligger i Botkyrka har just startat sina countrykvällar på onsdagskvällar och som de kallar Jukebox. Kul att en så populär park vill satsa på country en gång i veckan hela sommaren och förhoppningsvis så kommer det mycket folk. Några saker har dock gjort mig lite konfunderad. Varför kallar man denna countrykväll för Jukebox och varför säger man i annonseringen "I baren spelar vi den bästa schlagermusiken med låtarna du minns och alla tycker om"? Det sägs också i samma programblad att "vi bjuder på gräddan av country-pop-banden i Sverige"!!  Varför blanda in ordet pop under en countrymusikkväll och varför har arrangörerna inte engagerat ett enda Stockholmsband för de här kvällarna? Det tycker jag är konstigt! Eller de kanske inte tycker att t ex Mats Rådberg och Rankarna håller den klass som fordras på Hågelby? Vad vet jag? Men en sak vet jag och det är att entrébiljetten kostar 100:- och för att vara en onsdagskväll låter det mycket i mina öron.

Lida Countryfestival
 i Botkyrka firar 10 år den 28-29 juni med ett stort uppbåd av artister. Efter förra årets fantastiska folktillströmning så tror jag att arrangörerna räknar med att det kommer lika många i år. Mycket beror förstås på vädret och förhoppningsvis ska moln och skurar hålla sig borta. Artister i år är A Nashville Star Evening med Pat Roden, T. Jae Christian, Harley Cummins och Paul Alan Coons. Vidare kommer artister som Wanda Jackson, Mats Rådberg & Rankarna, Alf Robertson, Christina Lindberg, Ben Olander & Country Minstrels, Ramadam, Cheerful Diligence med flera. Det finns alla möjligheter att Lida Countryfestival blir en mycket lyckad tillställning i år också. Till skillnad mot Hågelbys artistval så kan vi här se en bunt Stockholmsband på scenen, vilket jag tycker är en självklarhet för en festival eller countrykvällar i stadens närhet.

Obviously, the Bluebird Cafe wasn't around when vocalist Jimmy Hall sang the words to this Wet Willie hit back in 1974. Doubtless, many singer-songwriters have shared the sentiment while playing in small clubs across America. So when Amy Kurland opened the Bluebird Cafe in June 1982, Nashville tunesmiths were delighted to find a club where they could try out original material on an audience who actually listened. Appropriately enough, Jimmy Hall was one of them.

Ironically, Kurland didn't originally intend to have live music at the Bluebird, which celebrates two decades of existence this coming month. She admits that she just wanted to open a "little luncheonette for the Green Hills crowd." The music was an afterthought. When she came back to Nashville after graduating from George Washington University in 1976 with a double major in American literature and American studies, she ended up like so many English majors: waiting tables. Kurland first worked at Dalts Grill and discovered a love for the culinary sciences. She even went to culinary school for a while, but dropped out. "I had this delusion that I could cook too," she says. While working as a waitress and operating a small pushcart business on Second Avenue, she saved her money with the idea of opening her own cafe. When her grandmother died and left her a small inheritance, she was able to accelerate her plans, opening the Bluebird on June 3, 1982.

"We had a really good lunch crowd back then," Kurland recalls. "I stole some of the recipes from Dalts. And every afternoon, we would pull the sound system out of the closet and assemble it, and the bands would come and play that night. The idea was to do jazz night on Thursday, and then have some rock bands on Friday and Saturday. Sometime that first summer, someone called and said they wanted to do a writers' night as a benefit for the World Hunger Year organization. I didn't really know what a writers' night was, but I said OK.

"We had a great night of music, the place was packed, but it was drop-dead quiet in there. I walked in there the next day and said, 'We need to do more of those.' It just felt like the right fit. The rock bands and the blues bands had been too loud. The jazz wasn't drawing as well as we'd hoped, and there were always too many people on the small stage. Then we did the writers' night, and it seemed like the room was made for it."

As the club's popularity grew, Kurland realized that she was now a full-fledged entrepreneur and would have to learn more about running a business. "About a year or so into it, I realized that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. All that naïveté that got me into this thing was gone, and I figured I'd better find out what I'm doing." She then enrolled in some small-business management courses at Nashville Tech, which she says "were all really helpful."

In 1985, songwriters Don Schlitz, Fred Knobloch, Paul Overstreet and Tom Schuyler came to Kurland with an idea they dubbed "Songwriters in the Round," modeled after the dinner theater concept. The idea was to put several tunesmiths together in a circle with the dining tables set around them. The intimate setting would allow them to trade songs and guitar licks, and it lent itself well to audience interaction and participation. It was also the forerunner of MTV's Unplugged. The first show went off well and became a trademark of the venue. In 1988, the first "Women in the Round" show was staged with Pam Tillis, Ashley Cleveland, Tricia Walker and Karen Staley participating. When Kurland, the daughter of a Nashville musician but admittedly not a proficient one herself, began auditioning new songwriters on Sunday nights, she unintentionally became one of the most powerful women in the music business. She also became famous for "shushing" rowdy patrons when they became too boisterous and distracted performers.

Over the course of the last 20 years, there have been many memorable evenings at the venue, such as the night in 1988 when a young singer from Oklahoma was put on the bill at the last minute and was offered a record deal by the same man (Capitol's Lynn Schultz) who had just turned him down a week before. A decade later, Garth Brooks had sold more records than any other solo artist in American history. This and hundreds of other anecdotes about the club's history are included in The Bluebird Scrapbook, which will be published by HarperCollins on June 18. Kurland thought of writing her own personal memoir of the Bluebird, but decided instead to contact many of the writers who have performed there regularly over the past 20 years, asking them to share their favorite memories.

The collection is a virtual who's-who of country, pop and gospel songwriters, including Paul Williams, Michael McDonald, Ricky Skaggs, Jonell Mosser, Paul Overstreet, Bob DiPiero, Marshall Chapman, Marcus Hummon, Gary Burr, Hugh Prestwood and dozens of others. Other memories include the night Peter Jennings and Lauren Bacall dropped in together, the Indigo Girls' debut, and performances by Carole King and Bill Monroe. There is the story of the feature on CBS' 48 Hours that inspired an L.A. screenwriter to pen The Thing Called Love, the River Phoenix-Sandra Bullock vehicle that ended up being filmed at the Bluebird. The events leading up to the Turner South network's weekly cable show Live From the Bluebird Cafe are also mentioned in the book. And yes, Amy actually did ask Garth Brooks to marry her after his original audition. "Some singers are willing to show their vulnerability to the audience, and there is something very appealing about that. I remember the first song that Garth sang was about worshipping a woman and putting her up on a pedestal," Amy laughs, "which is also something that was very appealing to me."

The Bluebird has a 20th anniversary show scheduled for June 3, which is the club's official anniversary date, but Kurland says she can't remember the actual date of the first writers' night; it was probably in July. The June 3 show will feature Jay Patten, Jimmy Hall, T. Graham Brown and Jonell Mosser on the bill so far, with others yet to be confirmed. The Bluebird's publicist, Mike Hyland, says one of the Turner shows has been nominated for a Southeast Regional Emmy, and the Cafe has also been named the Club of the Year by the Academy of Country Music. Not bad for a venue that started out as a little luncheonette.

SHeDAISY sisters and Brad Paisley survive chilling plane mishap -- an exclusive first-person account

It was May 5, a quiet Sunday afternoon at Nashville International Airport, when Brad Paisley and SheDAISY's Kelsi and Kassidy Osborn -- and 102 other Los Angeles-bound passengers -- boarded American Airlines flight 1307. Suddenly, the jet's tire ripped apart during takeoff and blew out an engine. The terrified passengers then endured four agonizing hours in the air as they prepared for the worst. In her own words, Kelsi Osborn recalls the story.

We were going down the runway when we heard loud popping noises -- like a car backfiring. It jerked the plane forward and back during takeoff. Alarms went off. I clutched my seat. Everyone gasped. We didn't know if the plane was going to plummet or stay in the sky. A man shouted, "We're going down!"

Then the pilot said over the intercom, "We're having engine problems. We need to circle until we can land." We had to burn most of our gas to land safely. So we circled Nashville, flying low, for four and a half hours.

Brad Paisley and his girlfriend, Kimberly Williams [star of ABC's According To Jim], were sitting near us. Brad seemed very calm. I asked him, "Is Kimberly OK?" He said, "She doesn't fly very well." They kept holding on to each other and hugging.

Later, Brad went to talk to some girls in another row who were really nervous. He helped calm them down, telling them we were going to be OK.

Kassidy called Kristyn [the third SHeDAISY sister], who was flying from Phoenix to meet us in L.A. Thank goodness she wasn't on our plane! She is very, very fearful of flying. Kassidy left a message: "If anything happens, we want you to know we love you, and Mom and Dad." Kristyn called our cellphone in tears, worried sick.

FAN FAIR 2002 ATTENDANCE UP
Event Continues to Grow with Non-Stop Excitement, More Music and Fun

Fan Fair 2002 made an impressive return to Downtown Nashville, Thursday through Sunday, June 13-16, with an aggregate attendance of more than 126,500 - slightly ahead of last year's record-breaking mark - making it the biggest crowd in Fan Fair's 31-year history. Enlarging the event and improving on the successes of Fan Fair's move to Downtown Nashville in 2001, "The World's Biggest Country Music Festival" provided more activities, more stars and more music for the fans to enjoy.

"I'm happy to say it was a big success," said Ed Benson, Executive Director of CMA. "At a time when concert ticket sales are soft, we were able to hold the line and actually increase our attendance. More importantly, the improvements we made for Fan Fair 2002 were appreciated by the fans and the hundreds of artists who participated. Thanks to the breadth of activities, music and venues Fan Fair has evolved into an extraordinary, world-class musical event."

Nightly Concerts
More than 40 artists participated in the star-studded nightly concerts at Adelphia Coliseum during the four days. The coliseum set up featured new state-of-the-art staging with improved sight lines and more seating. Even the traditional finale fireworks displays were bigger and better for 2002. Many of Country Music's hottest stars took to the Adelphia stage, including Trace Adkins, Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Billy Ray Cyrus, Diamond Rio, Alan Jackson, George Jones, Toby Keith, Martina McBride, Jo Dee Messina, John Michael Montgomery, Rascal Flatts, Earl Scruggs, SHeDAISY, Cyndi Thomson, keith urban and Lee Ann Womack. One of the most popular elements of the nightly concerts at Fan Fair continued to be the photo line, where fans get close to the stage for shots of their favorite artists.

Country superstars Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn kicked off the nightly concerts and brought the screaming fans to their feet with the patriotic anthem "Only In America," jumpstarting the RCA Label Group show. The star-filled concert featured outstanding performances, including Alan Jackson, who ended his set with a poignant performance of "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning," which he debuted on the CMA Awards in November 2001.

During the Sony Music show Friday, fans were thrilled when Tracy Lawrence and Joe Diffie joined Mark Chesnutt on stage for a preview of the upcoming "Rockin' Roadhouse Tour." The trio made several appearances throughout the week. Billy Ray Cyrus, star of PAX-TV's "Doc," closed the night with "Achy Breaky Heart" the signature hit he debuted at Fan Fair in 1992. The stars of "Days of Our Lives" and "Passions" took turns introducing each performance as they kicked off a weekend of Fan Fair appearances.


It was another star-packed night at Adelphia Coliseum, with comedian Bill Engvall hosting the WEA and EMI Show Saturday. Australian guitar slinger keith urban recognized Father's Day with a touching new song about his own father, "Song for Dad." Jo Dee Messina had a few surprises for the crowd, mixing hits like "I'm Alright" and "Bring on the Rain" with a medley that featured the Country classic "Stand By Your Man" and Aretha Franklin's "Think."

The final concert at Adelphia Coliseum on Sunday brought a fitting end to an action-packed week, with comedian T. Bubba Bechtol as host of the UMVD Show. Legendary banjo picker Earl Scruggs and his sons performed Scrugg's classic "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" and invited Dan Tyminski to join them for "I Am A Man of Constant Sorrow." A brief downpour didn't dampen enthusiasm for Lee Ann Womack, who performed "I Hope You Dance" with people dancing in the rain. The skies cleared as Toby Keith closed the show with a robust set of his hits that kept fans on their feet until the ending fireworks.

Greased Lightning Riverfront Park Stages
The Greased Lightning Riverfront Park Stages, bustled with a rich array of artists from both major and independent labels, showcased a broad range of musical influences and styles from classic to alternative Country, and proved to be one of Fan Fair's favorite new venues.

The Bellamy Brothers kicked off the excitement Thursday morning and by late Sunday, more than 70 artists had performed including Sherrié Austin; Steve Azar; David Ball; Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash; Chad Brock; Lane Brody; Tracy Byrd; Jeff Carson; Kellie Coffey (who also appeared at Adelphia); Earl Thomas Conley; Rodney Crowell; David Frizzell; Andy Griggs; Eric Heatherly; Marie Sisters; McBride & The Ride; Brian McComas; Tift Merritt; Craig Morgan; David Nail; Nashville Bluegrass Band; The Oak Ridge Boys; James Otto; Lee Roy Parnell; Eddy Raven; Dan Seals; Shenandoah; Anthony Smith; Connie Smith; the reunion of Joe Stampley & Moe Bandy; Tommy Shane Steiner; Kevin Welch; Darryl Worley and Billy Yates.
NBC Daytime stars Matt Cedeno, Justin Carroll, Melissa Reeves and Bruce Michael Hall took the stage to participate and banter back and forth with the fans.

Exhibit Halls
A total of 445 artists appeared in the air-conditioned Exhibit Hall at the Nashville Convention Center for the autograph and photo sessions Thursday through Sunday. Fan attendance in the Hall exceeded 46,000, up 21% from last year when the Hall was only open three days.

Fans lined up early (some as early as 2:00 AM) for admittance to the Exhibit Hall in hopes of meeting their favorite Country stars. Among the artists who had long lines at their booths were Trace Adkins, Alabama, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tracy Lawrence, Rascal Flatts, Andy Griggs, Brad Paisley, Jo Dee Messina, Neal McCoy, Blake Shelton, Tommy Shane Steiner, Pam Tillis and Lee Ann Womack.

Superstar group Lonestar turned the tables on fans at the Exhibit Hall having thousands of fans do the autograph signing on a special wall in their booth. Billy Hoffman transformed his booth into an Old West Saloon, complete with barstools where his fans could sit and talk.

A wall mural with Alan Jackson riding shotgun in a Jeep with his "video" family from "Drive" adorned his booth. Bryan White invited his fans to fish in his booth, which was inspired by bait and tackle shops. At the Bush's Country Style Baked Beans booth, fans could get their photo with Jay Bush and his dog Duke and e-mail it to their family and friends.

Stars of NBC Daytime
The stars of NBC's daytime dramas "Days of Our Lives" and "Passions" made a return trip to Fan Fair in 2002. The enthusiastic stars hosted the Sony show at Adelphia Coliseum Friday night, signed autographs in the Exhibit Hall and hosted a sold-out Fan Fair After Hours event at the Wildhorse Saloon. The actors sang, read scripts with fans and performed with Country artists Michael Peterson and keith urban - proving that acting isn't their only talent.

Melissa Reeves ("Jennifer" on "Days of our Lives") and James Hyde ("Sam" on "Days") kicked off the show by introducing Kyle Lowder ("Brady" on "Days"), who got the fans to sing along as he performed "90 Miles to Baton Rouge." Other soaps stars showing off their singing talents included Lindsay Korman ("Theresa" on "Passions"), who performed "How Do I Live," and Peter Reckell ("Bo" on "Days"), who performed a song from his new album.

Other stars participating in Fan Fair included Matthew Ashford ("Jack" on "Days"), Matt Cedeno ("Brandon" on "Days"), Arianne Zucker ("Nicole" on "Days"), Andrea Evans ("Rebecca" on "Passions"), Christopher Douglas ("Brian" on "Passions"), Justin Carroll ("David" on Passions"), and Bruce Michael Hall ("Reese" on "Passions").

"Between the Lions" and the Family Zone
Children of all ages enjoyed the Family Zone - a free interactive area on Broadway between First and Second Avenues in Downtown Nashville. Packed with activities for adults and children, there were free product samples and information from several Fan Fair partners including Domino's Pizza; Bush's Country Style Baked Beans; Kellogg's Cinnamon Crispix cereal; Greased Lightning Super Strength Cleaner; and Clarinex. The Coca-Cola Sega Interactive Game Truck was a hit with kids as were the inflatable rides; the Got Milk Soccer Shoot Out; the Mars Music Musical Petting Zoo (which featured a variety of instruments for kids to try); the Cracker Barrel tent with rocking chairs and checker board games; and the Food Lion-sponsored Book 'Em booth with reading projects for children.

For the second year, the PBS children's television show "Between The Lions" visited Downtown Nashville with popular puppets Cleo and her rambunctious son Lionel encouraging children to read. The program, which was sponsored by Food Lion, featured two shows at the Wildhorse Saloon with celebrity readers Neal McCoy, Tracy Lawrence and Joe Diffie. Later, Cleo and Lionel greeted kids at the Food Lion Book 'Em booth in the Fan Fair Family Zone.

On Sunday, celebrities read stories to children as part of the Food Lion Book 'Em campaign at the Hilton Park in front of the Country Music Hall of Fame in the Downtown campus. Guest readers Sherrié Austin, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Craig Morgan and Chalee Tennison sat in rocking chairs surrounded by children and read stories including The Cat In The Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.

Fan Fair After Hours
Long after the concerts were finished at Adelphia Coliseum, the music and fun were still alive at many of Nashville's most popular downtown nightspots during Fan Fair After Hours. A dozen clubs including Buffalo Billiards, Graham Central Station, The Stage, Hard Rock Café, Legends Corner, Tootsie's Orchard Lounge and the Wildhorse Saloon hosted Fan Fair attendees for more of Nashville's best entertainment well into the night.

Fan Fair Activities
The first "CMT Flameworthy Video Music Awards" provided an exciting new lead in for Fan Fair 2002 with many stars, including the Dixie Chicks, who were on hand to receive the special Flameworthy Video Visionary Award. Hosted by actress Kathy Najimy, awards were presented in 12 categories for video excellence.

After the Awards, Marty Stuart hosted "Marty Stuart's Late Night Jam" at the Ryman Auditorium. The After Hours event, which also featured performance by Montgomery Gentry, Travis Tritt and several others, had fans on their feet singing and dancing until the wee hours of the morning

For the first time at Fan Fair, the "Wheel of Fortune" Wheelmobile rolled into Music City, USA in search of contestants to appear on the popular game show. The two-day auditions began Friday, June 14 at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Downtown Nashville. Participants were chosen from the audience at random to play a scaled-down version of the game, spinning a small wheel for prizes and guessing letters to complete a puzzle. Country star Pam Tillis and "Passions" star James Hyde both made a surprise visit at the auditions to cheer-on thousands of eager contestants. "Wheel of Fortune" will be back in January 2003 to tape several shows at the Grand Ole Opry House for "Country Music Stars Week."

The Fan Fair Celebrity Archery Shoot-Out Friday, June 14, scored a bulls-eye list of shooting stars. Country artists competed in the parking lot of Adelphia Coliseum. RCA recording artist Andy Griggs, who hosted the event, took the top prize with 106 points, leading his competitors to joke that it was "rigged." Other artists who participated include Tracy Byrd, Jeff Carson, Gary Levox of Rascal Flatts, Chris Marcy, Brad Paisley, Joshua Ragsdale, Blake Shelton, Rusty Tabor, Neil Thrasher and Darryl Worley.

Fan Fair Radio Partner MJI
CMA's official Fan Fair radio partner MJI Programming, a division of Premiere Radio Networks, brought to Nashville some of Country Radio's top-rated stations for a four-day remote that covered the excitement of Fan Fair from the Nashville Convention Center. Among the dozens of artists who took the opportunity to visit with fans via radio were Chris Cagle, Diamond Rio, Sara Evans, Alan Jackson, Lonestar, Martina McBride, Jo Dee Messina, Jamie O'Neal, Brad Paisley, Cyndi Thomson, Trick Pony, Phil Vassar, Lee Ann Womack, Trisha Yearwood and many others including the NBC soap opera stars.

Stations taking part were WUSN-Chicago, WMZQ-Washington D.C., KSD-St. Louis, WFMS-Indianapolis, WCOL-Columbus, WKKT-Charlotte, WDAF-Kansas City, WSM/FM-Nashville, WGKX-Memphis, WAMZ-Louisville, WPOC-Baltimore, WQDR-Raleigh, WQYK-Tampa, WYAY-Atlanta and the syndicated radio show "After Midnight with Blair Garner."

Fan Fair Partner Ford Trucks
Ford, the exclusive truck of Fan Fair, brought several programming elements to the festival this year: Two interactive displays were set up featuring cars and skill tests around the Fan Fair campus. For the first time, the Ford No Boundaries Fun Street Team was sent out throughout the Downtown footprint each day to meet with fans, answer questions and give away free souvenirs. Ford Trucks presented the Ford Legends Wall honoring those leaders in the Country Music industry who have passed away in the last year - providing a biography on each.

The Middle Tennessee Ford Dealers Association gave away a Ford Expedition on the last night of Fan Fair with the help of SHeDAISY and local radio station WSIX-FM. And each night at Adelphia Coliseum, Ford Trucks and the Country Music Hall of Fame presented trivia on the big screens as fans arrived. Ford Trucks and Outsmart joined forces with the Country Music Hall of Fame to produce two web events featuring Country artists including Montgomery Gentry and Jeff Carson.

Tower Records Fan Fair Sales
According to Tower Records, which sold CDs at the Nashville Convention Center, Adelphia Coliseum and Greased Lightning Riverfront Park Stages, the top 10 selling artists for Fan Fair 2002 were (in order) Little Big Town, Kellie Coffey, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, Trace Adkins, Alan Jackson, Steve Azar, Brad Paisley, Sara Evans and Tommy Shane Steiner. All of these artists performed during Fan Fair.

www.FanFair.com, Fan Fair's official website, had 116,000 unique visitors during the first 16 days of June, with a total of 372,301 page views and 6279,163 hits. The site's web cam provided more than 3,000 photos of artist performances from the evening concerts at Adelphia Coliseum over the course of four days.

Tickets
Tickets for Fan Fairâ 2003 are on sale for a limited time at 2002 prices. And there is a new four-day ticket option - the Gold Circle. Gold Circle tickets include preferred seating on the field at center stage; preferred parking at the Coliseum; wait service at your seat; and an exclusive padded chair to take home as a souvenir.

Till att börja med vill jag önska en glad midsommarafton till alla som läser mina nyhetsblad. Ja, jag har inte blivit så senil att jag glömt att vi redan firat  midsommar,  men det är ju så att den riktiga midsommarafton faktiskt inträder idag den 23 juni. Midsommardagen, Johannes Döparens Dag, är högtid i kyrkoåret 24 juni, i morgon alltså. Sedan 1952 är den här helgen förlagd till närmast liggande fredag, lördag och söndag och någon har kallat den för den socialistiska midsommarhelgen. Majstången, eller midsommarstången som många numera kallar den, har sitt ursprung från södra Europa och kommer av att man "majade" (lövade) både hem, kyrkor, vagnar med mera. Men vad har nu detta med countrymusik att göra? Tja, ingenting faktiskt, men visst är det intressant?

Oldsmobile lägger ned sin tillverkning från och med nu efter 137 år skriver The City Paper i Nashville, Tennessee.  General Motors tog det här belsutet för länge sedan och det är säkert många som gråter över det beslutet. Oldsmobile har besjungits i en hel del countrylåtar genom åren och förmodligen har många countryartister ägt en sådan bil!

Bluegrass Night arrives at Ryman The annual series of bluegrass shows at the Ryman Auditorium begins at 7:30 tonight with Vince Gill and will continue each Thursday until Aug. 1, with the exception of July 4. Bluegrass Night at the Ryman, sponsored by Chevrolet, brought the house down last year with quality performances by Gill, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, and the Del McCoury Band.

New Ralph Stanley album sells 100,000 in first week

Bluegrass guru Ralph Stanley, who sang O Death on the O Brother soundtrack, has been in the midst of a whirlwind publicity tour for his new self-titled CD, produced by T Bone Burnett. Stanley appeared on Good Morning America and Jay Leno's show. The result is that his new CD sold 100,000 units in its first week.

Dixie Chicks form new label with Sony

The Dixie Chicks, who accused Sony Music of cheating them out of millions of dollars in royalties, have reconciled with the company and will release their next record under a new label jointly created by the group and Sony. The disc Home will be released on August 27 on Open Wide Records. The Dixie Chicks said that they believe Home is their best album and that ''our reconciliation with Sony Music couldn't have come at a better time.''

Ralph Stanley Finally Hits the Album Chart

Now in his 56th year of performing, Ralph Stanley finally lands on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. His self-titled album debuts at No. 22. Stanley has appeared on the Billboard charts once before, as half of the Stanley Brothers, with the 1960 single "How Far to Little Rock," which reached No. 17. 

The O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack -- which propelled Stanley to stardom -- dethrones Kenny Chesney's No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems after seven straight weeks at No. 1. The soundtrack has now been charting for 80 weeks.

Alan Jackson's Drive stays at No. 3, Brad Paisley's Part II holds at No. 4, and Toby Keith's Pull My Chain climbs two spots to No. 5.

Filling out the Top 10 are Brooks & Dunn's Steers & Stripes, Martina McBride's Greatest Hits, Tim McGraw's Greatest Hits and his Set This Circus Down, and Rascal Flatts.

Also debuting this week is Sawyer Brown's Can You Hear Me Now at No. 39 and Inside Traxx, a NASCAR-themed album by various artists, at No. 48.

George Strait's "Living and Living Well" repeats for a second week atop the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart but faces plenty of competition. Top 10 singles still climbing are Lonestar's "Not a Day Goes By" at No. 3, Gary Allan's "The One" at No. 5, Chesney's "The Good Stuff" at No. 6, Brooks & Dunn's "My Heart Is Lost to You" at No. 7, and Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" at No. 8. The Dixie Chicks' "Long Time Gone" rises to No. 15 in its fourth week of release.

Singles debuting this week are Rascal Flatts' "These Days" at No. 48, Jackson's "Work in Progress" at No. 52, Emerson Drive's "Fall into Me" at No. 56, and Chesney's "A Lot of Things Different" at No. 59.

Hågelbyparkens satsning på countrymusik slog tydligen inte väl ut och man har lagt ned onsdagskvällarnas Jukebox vad jag erfar. I mitt nyhetsblad från den 1 juni skrev jag följande angående den satsningen:

Hågelbyparken som ligger i Botkyrka har just startat sina countrykvällar på onsdagskvällar och som de kallar Jukebox. Kul att en så populär park vill satsa på country en gång i veckan hela sommaren och förhoppningsvis så kommer det mycket folk. Några saker har dock gjort mig lite konfunderad. Varför kallar man denna countrykväll för Jukebox och varför säger man i annonseringen "I baren spelar vi den bästa schlagermusiken med låtarna du minns och alla tycker om"? Det sägs också i samma programblad att "vi bjuder på gräddan av country-pop-banden i Sverige"!!  Varför blanda in ordet pop under en countrymusikkväll och varför har arrangörerna inte engagerat ett enda Stockholmsband för de här kvällarna? Det tycker jag är konstigt! Eller de kanske inte tycker att t ex Mats Rådberg och Rankarna håller den klass som fordras på Hågelby? Vad vet jag? Men en sak vet jag och det är att entrébiljetten kostar 100:- och för att vara en onsdagskväll låter det mycket i mina öron.

I nästa utskick kommer en reviderad upplaga av SommarCountry, mitt eget kalendarium för Skandinavien, då en del förändringar tillkommit.

Till slut vill jag meddela alla som varit vänliga att hålla utkik efter mina stulna dobrogitarrer att de har återfunnits. Enligt den cargofirma på Arlanda som skulle leverera mina gitarrer så hade de blivit stulna från deras lager. Men för några dagar sedan fick jag ett samtal från dem där de berättade att paketet har dykt upp efter att det felaktigt hamnat någonstans i södra Sverige. På måndag ska jag få paketet levererat hem till mig och det känns mycket skönt att det här löste sig på ett så bra sätt. Hej vänner,  nu duggar nyhetsbladen tätt! Men jag hoppas att de ska vara en rolig läsning vid stranden, i solstolen eller varhelst ni befinner er.  På torsdag börjar Lida Country Festival och ni får all information på sidan www.cjb.net  Hoppas att vädret kommer att stabilisera sig till dess. En notering jag har gjort är att Lida är den enda av svenska festivaler som på sina hemsidor stavar helt rätt på alla artisters namn. Rekord på felstavningar är 6 fel på en sida, vilket en av de stora festivalerna lyckats med!  En mindre skandal tycker jag!

Nedan kan ni läsa om en av mina favoriter Ray Price. Tänk första gången jag lyssnade på en EP med låtar som  "I´ve Got A New Heartache" och "You Done Me Wrong". Oj vilken lycka! Intresserade av att köpa Ray Priceboxen på Bear Family? Den innehåller allt material från 1950 – 1966. Sammanlagt 10 CDs med ca. 27 – 28 låtar på varje. Ray Price: 50 Years Since Chart Debut

     Half a century ago this summer, Ray Price made his first appearance on the Billboard country charts where he stayed for a full thirty years. That's a pretty good show of longevity and it seems unlikely that any of today's high-flyers will last in the public eye half as long. They certainly won't be doing it with an original sound, like Price did when he created a 4/4 shuffle which has since been referred to as the Ray Price Beat. Before that he'd been a straight hillbilly singer, then after the shuffle, he's gone from a fine western swinger to a smooth countrypolitan complete with strings and choruses.

     His career began with spots on the Hillbilly Circus in Abilene and the influential Big D Jamboree in Dallas and made his debut disc in 1949 for the independent Dallas label, Bullet. The tracks, Your Wedding Corsage and Jealous Lies were cut at Jim Beck's studio in Dallas and sat squarely in the hillbilly mould. His big break came on March 15th, 1951, when following constant promoting by talent scout Troy Martin, he was picked up by Columbia. Apparently A&R at the label, Don Law, wasn't convinced by Price but eventually relented. By this time Price was kicking around with another Martin discovery Lefty Frizzell, gaining vital experience in a number of areas, some of them musical!

     Martin worked hard to secure a spot on the Grand Ole Opry and it was here that Price befriended the legendary Hank Williams, who was smack in the middle of self-destructing. Hank showed him the ropes and was so taken with his new running-buddy that he wrote Weary Blues for him and lent him his Drifting Cowboys for Price's earliest Columbia sessions. Price repayed Hank by stepping in for him when Hank missed a show, an occurrence that was sadly becoming the norm more than the exception.

     The first session came in March '51 and any nerves that he may have felt were quashed by the experience of Hank's band who had seen it all before. Don Helms on steel, Jerry Rivers on fiddle, Cedric Rainwater on bass and lead guitarist, Sammy Pruett gave the songs a distinct Hank Williams sound, although the sweet, lilting vocals, show that Ray Price was always intent on being his own man. One of the highlights, If You're Ever Lonely was written by Lefty, whilst The Road Of No Return sounds like the song Hank never done - a classic honky-tonk weeper.

     Appearances with Williams and the other top Nashville stars, as well as the Opry broadcasts, ensured that the public was becoming aware of Ray Price, all he needed now was the right song. That came courtesy of C.M. Bradley and Louise Ulrich who came up with Talk To Your Heart. From the opening strains of "When you're alone at night/With the world locked outside/Have a talk to your heart about me", it's pure honky-tonk heaven with Price pushing his vocals farther than he'd done before and the Drifting Cowboys providing the perfect teardrop backdrop.

     Cut on Valentine's Day, 1952, the single (Columbia 20913) came out a month later and by May had entered the charts, among strong competition from Williams himself who was riding high with Half As Much. Lefty was also high on the hog with Don't Stay Away (Till Love Grows Cold) and others jockeying for Joe Public's nickels included Ernest Tubb (Somebody Stole My Money), Hank Thompson (Wild Side Of Life), Carl Smith ((Are You Teasing Me?), Hank Snow (The Gold Rush Is Over) and Eddy Arnold (Easy On The Eyes).

     Despite the stiff competition, Talk To Your Heart entered the Top 10 and eventually peaked at number three. It was massive achievement which he was able to replicate with the follow-up, when Don't Let The Stars Get in Your Eyes hit the number four spot later in the year. 1953 was a stranger year which saw the death of Hank Williams and Price failing to register a hit record. One upshot of Williams' demise was that most of the Drifting Cowboys joined Price, but eventually, as Price strove to find his own sound, the band was dissipated as he formed his own band, the Cherokee Cowboys. The following year he returned to the charts with I'll Be There (If You Ever Want Me) and began an unbroken spell of hits for the next three decades.

      His career has been a star-studded affair that has seen phenomenal hits like Crazy Arms, City Lights and For The Good Times, as well as band members that have included Roger Miller and Willie Nelson. He is still active today, amazing when you consider that his first hit was 50 years ago this month.

Så har då en av sommaren stora festivaler, Lida Country Festival, klarats av och det känns som en inledning på sommaren. Lida ligger tidsmässigt bland de första av festivaler och i närheten av Stockholm, så därför förväntar man sig att det ska komma mycket folk. Så blev det också trots att vädret inte var helt bra. Men jag tror att det var förra årets succé med kanonväder och väldigt mycket folk som bäddade för att det kom så många människor även i år.  Kul för arrangörerna som förmodligen då även i år får lite klirr i kassan. Det ryktas om att de ska flytta till Söderhavet snart! Någon recention får ni inte av mig, men ni kan säkert läsa om festivalen i Kountry Korral eller Gazetten, Stockholms Country Music Club. Vadå, är du inte medlem i dessa förnäma klubbar? Då är det dags att gå med och dra ditt strå till stacken!

Jordanaire's Duane West dies

Nashville session singer Duane West, who was one of The Southern Gentlemen with Sonny James in the 1960s and filled in for Jordanaires when needed and eventually became the official Baritone member in 1982, following the death of Hoyt Hawkins, died last week. He was 61 Years Old.

Sony köper Acuff-Rose Music Publishing

The world's first music publishing company devoted to country music changed ownership yesterday, along with some of the most notable songs in America.

Nashville-based Gaylord Entertainment Co. sold Acuff-Rose Music Publishing to Sony/ATV Music Publishing for $157 million. As part of the deal, Sony/ATV also acquires three Music Row buildings. The deal is subject to approval from federal antitrust regulators.

''I don't anticipate a problem there,'' said Donna Hilley, Sony/ATV's president and chief executive officer.

Hilley has long sought Acuff-Rose's catalog, which includes songs written by Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and many others. The catalog has about 55,000 songs.

''I got my wish,'' Hilley said. ''I feel like I'm truly blessed. … It was a Nashville-grown company, and it's going to a Nashville-grown company.''

Sony/ATV beat out six to eight other suitors. The deal was signed about 2 p.m. yesterday.

''Clearly, they were the high buyer for this,'' said Colin Reed, Gaylord's president and CEO.

Acuff-Rose owns such standards as Tennessee Waltz, made famous by Patti Page; Bye, Bye Love and Wake Up Little Susie, both by the Everly Brothers; and Oh, Pretty Woman, co-written and recorded by Orbison.

''This a wonderful price for this asset,'' Reed said of the $157 million.

For Gaylord, the sale is part of a string of recent transactions that has netted the company more than $250 million.

In an announcement yesterday, the company said it has sold its stake in the Opry Mills shopping mall for a value totaling $30.8 million.

It received $25.8 million in cash from the deal. Gaylord's investment was the land on which the mall sits.

Through the sale, which was expected, Gaylord gained complete control of 124 acres across Briley Parkway from Opryland Resort & Convention Center and will consider options for the land.

Gaylord also received a $64.6 million refund by way of President Bush's Job Creation and Worker Assistance Act of 2002, which Bush signed into law after Sept. 11 to help stimulate the economy.

''We are going to pay down debt and get our Texas property open,'' Reed said of the resort and convention center under construction near the Dallas-Fort Worth airport.

Reed, CEO for a little more than a year, has been attempting to return the company to profitability after two years of losses by focusing mostly on the hotel business. Gaylord has sold Christian record label Word Entertainment and the film businesses, as well as shut down money-losing operations.

Gaylord still is trying to find a buyer for its 20% stake in the Nashville Predators hockey team, its last major high-profile property up for sale.

Reed said in May that Acuff-Rose was for sale. Singer Roy Acuff and songwriter Fred Rose, both future Country Music Hall of Fame members, founded the company in 1942.

It was one of the bedrocks in establishing a country music industry in Nashville. Acuff-Rose became part of Opryland Music Group in 1985, which had been bought by Gaylord in 1983.

Music publishers own the rights to market songs, which they supply to record companies and artists. They grant licenses to the record labels and others to use their music, such as motion picture makers and advertising producers. Publishers also collect royalties for themselves and songwriters.

Selling Acuff-Rose puts the catalog in the hands of a company that can provide better distribution, Reed said.

One option Gaylord had considered was partnering with another company.

''Personally, I don't like passive investment in assets,'' he said.

When Gaylord's hotel opens in Grapevine, Texas, in 2004, it will generate a cash flow of about $40 million a year, significantly higher than Acuff-Rose, Reed said.

Hej vänner!

Trots att vi är mitt i högsommaren så kommer här ett nytt nyhetsblad från CMS. Sensationellt så kommer Billboard att från och med 20 juli ha en bluegrasslista med i sin tidning. Anledningen är att filmen O Brother Where Art Thou blivit en så enorm succé och som ni läst har jag berättat om den i tidigare nyhetsblad. Ralph Stanley som sjöng sångerna i filmen har blivit mycket populär den senaste tiden. Hela 10 bluegrassalbum har legat på Top Country Albumlistan i Billboard. På den nya listan kommer 15 album att finnas med och det blir en blandning av olika typer av bluegrass.

 "You Are My Sunshine" som bl a sjöngs i filmen ovan skrevs av Jimmie Davis som för övrigt var guvenör i USA vid två tillfällen.

As half of the Louvin Brothers, Charlie Louvin (born Charlie Elzer Loudermilk, July 7, 1927) was one of the most influential musicians of the '40s and '50s; the Louvins defined close harmony duet singing for several generations of country fans. After the Louvins disbanded in 1963, Charlie began a solo career, recording for Capitol Records until 1972. During that time, he had two Top Ten hits — "I Don't Love You Anymore" (number four, 1964) and "See the Big Man Cry (number seven, 1965) — as well as a series of minor hits. Det är ingen dålig uppställning på Opryn det här veckoslutet. Visst vore det kul att vara i Nashville, men jag kan berätta att det just nu pågår en "thunderstorm" och den väntas ligga kvar några dagar. Temperaturen idag är ca. 22 grader men väntas om några dagar stiga till över 30 som är mer normalt för årstiden. Häromveckan var det översvämningar i San Antonio. Just nu störtregnar det utanför mitt fönster i Sätra, men igår var det kanonfint väder. En typisk svensk sommar!

Jag är just i färd med att beställa Bear Familyboxar och är ni intresserade av att hänga på så hör av er omgående.

Redan nu kan jag redovisa höstens countryjam i Kvarnsveden. Tommy Backström och co. kämpar på och det här har snart blivit en institution. Dagarna är  29 augusti, 26 september, 31 oktober och 28 november.

Hej vänner, nu har det varit hett i Stockholm under några dagar, men just nu sitter jag i en sval del av min lägenhet där jag t o m har en takfläkt. Lite nyheter har jag förstås till er och ni kan läsa dessa rader under tiden ni ligger i hängmattan eller sitter "backporch" och spelar på en banjo, fiddle eller kanske bara en blockflöjt.

Man kan ju undra om nedanstående är en trend i Branson eller om det bara är en tillfällighet att Mel Tillis säljer sin teater?

Tillis Will Shutter Branson Theater

The Associated Press reports that Mel Tillis has sold his theater in Branson, Mo. The country star announced the sale of his 2,600-seat venue and 13 acres of land on Wednesday (July 10). He will perform 135 more shows there, through New Year’s Eve, then he plans to write songs, record with his band, the Statesiders, and make a Christmas album with his family. Tillis has been a mainstay of the Branson scene since 1990. He built the theater he sold this week in 1994. The new owner will lease the theater to the Tri-Lakes Assembly of God, to be used as a church. Sale price was not disclosed. Tillis will split time between homes in Branson, Tennessee and Florida. 07/11/02

Expressen hade nyligen en stor artikel om Dolly Parton på sina nöjessidor. Tack, det gläder oss att de stora tidningarna ändå inte glömt oss countryfans. Artikeln var införd söndagen den 7 juli 2002 och skrevs av Håkan Matson som  är stationerad i USA.

Det är en skaplig bunt med shower och det är kul att se att Old Ryman lever upp igen! Jag var själv där och  beskådade en 4-timmars show för några år sedan och jag minns att jag blev imponerad över den behagliga ljudnivån.  Det var inte det här vanliga rocksoundet med bas och trummor, som man alltid träffar på under svenska festivaler. Här var det viktigt att få fram ett balanserat  countrysound. Vi såg bl a Patty Loveless, Marty Stuart, Sam Bush, Emmylou Harris och många fler under den här kvällen.

Ryman Auditorium är gamla Grand Ole Opry som ligger strax ovanför Broadway i Nashville och där radiostationen WSM haft sin hemvist under lång tid. 1925 startade den första utsändningen för stationen och då från en liten studio. Efterhand flyttades showerna till olika platser p g a att programmet blev så enormt populärt. Ryman byggdes redan 1885 som en kyrka, men blev Grand Ole Opry först 1941 då WSM flyttade dit. Opryland och Opry House strax utanför Nashville invigdes 1974 och Old Ryman blev ett museum och ett monument över countrymusiken. Under de senaste 5 –6 åren har man dels rustat upp den gamla slitna lokalen, dels börjat med olika shower igen.

Apropå radiostationer! Ni som bor i Stockholmstrakten bör inte glömma mitt direktsända program på Radio Lidingö i morgon kväll. 20.00 börjar jag och frekvensen är som vanligt 97,8. Jag har en hel del intressanta saker att spela upp för er.

Jag var just inne och tittade och lyssnade på digfi.com ,  SAMI s egen sida där man kan lägga in demolåtar, lyssna på världens bästa hits m m. Självklart ville jag lyssna på demolåtar som gick under namnet country. Där fanns 13 låtar inspelade av olika kvaliteter. Men………. var fanns countrymusiken i detta? Dagens ungdomar har tydligen inte den blekaste aning om vad countrymusik står för. Den ende som fick godkänt var Martin Tallström med en instrumental sak som i mångt och mycket liknade Jimmy Bryants fingerfärdiga spel. Alla andra får bakläxa och ombedes att genast införskaffa några plattor med Hank Williams, Jimmy Rodgers, Alan Jackson eller George Strait!

  Det sägs att grammofonarkivet på Sveriges Radio har köpt in en box med Hank Williams! Inte ett årtionde för tidigt!

Mitch Miller, orkesterledaren, var en av de första att överföra countrymusik till populärmusikgenren. Hans produktioner med Patti Pages "Tennessee Waltz" och Tony Bennets "Cold Cold Heart" slog ordentligt och sålde miljoner skivor på den tiden.

"Happy Birthday Bobby Hicks...!!!"

Born in Newton, North Carolina, Hicks took up the fiddle after being dropped as the mandolin player in his brother's band. Self-taught, Hicks' perseverance paid off when he was brought into Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys in 1954, earning Monroe's deep respect. In 1960, he moved on from Monroe to join Porter Wagoner for three years, after which he settled in Las Vegas as the bandleader for the Judy Lynn show, a position that kept him occupied until 1970.
On the road until 1975, Hicks finally chose to return to North Carolina, where he developed a friendship with Ricky Skaggs and released the well-regarded Texas Crapshooter in 1977 (reissued in 1994 by County Records). Darkness of the Delta, a twin fiddle set with Kenny Baker, followed in 1980, as did the Bluegrass Album Band, a traditional bluegrass project that saw Hicks joining guitarist Tony Rice and others. Hicks left the informal band in the four years between the production of The Bluegrass Album Vol. 4 and The Bluegrass Album Vol. 5, but would return for 1996's The Bluegrass Album Vol. 6.

In 1981, Hicks was drafted into the Ricky Skaggs Band, which evolved into Kentucky Thunder over the years, with Hicks being the only original member left. While remaining a member of the Skaggs recording and touring unit as of 1998, Hicks has continued to play on sessions, as well as recording and releasing the star-studded 1998 solo set Fiddle Patch, on which he uses his now-standard five-string fiddle, a 1976 custom creation of the late Harvey Keck. — Steven McDonald

Marty Stuart Produces Johnny Cash Tribute

Sony Music Nashville will release Kindred Spirits, a tribute to Johnny Cash's songwriting on September 24. The CD will feature Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Keb' Mo', Hank Williams, Jr., Travis Tritt, Janette Carter and more.
The collection was produced by country star Marty Stuart, who maintains a close relationship with Cash's family. Stuart was married to Cash's daughter Cindy and played in Cash's backing band in the early 1980's.

"My vision from the start has been to portray Johnny Cash the songwriter," said Stuart. "He's such a poignant & insightful writer and this has never been done. In the likeness of Johnny, each artist brought their own interpretation to the songs. Johnny's renegade spirit transcends throughout the project."

Dwight Yoakam Turns It Loose at Ryman

Dwight Yoakam raced through two hours of music Tuesday night (July 24) at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, making his ambitious set list seem almost like a fleeting medley of hits. While 28 turbo-charged tunes might exhaust a casual fan, the marathon concert certainly caused a commotion among the capacity crowd, especially when Yoakam shimmied in his tight jeans.

A huge white banner hung behind the Kentucky native, emblazoned with his silhouette and the words “Honky Tonk & Rodeos.” The only other decorative touches were three plastic chairs shaped like martini glasses, complete with oversized “stuffed” olives. Quite a change from Brooks & Dunn’s Neon Circus tour, where Yoakam has spent most of the summer.

Leading the charge with “What Do You Know About Love,” Yoakam roared through “Guitars, Cadillacs,” “Little Sister” and “Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose,” barely pausing to say, “It’s an honor to play in Nashville in this location.” Later in the show, the usually reserved Yoakam stopped several times to acknowledge the fans’ support of his career and to thank them sincerely for coming to the Ryman.

Yoakam sprinkled new material (Jann Browne’s “Louisville”) and less familiar songs (“Heartaches Are Free”) among favorites like “Little Ways,” “I Sang Dixie,” “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” and “It Only Hurts Me When I Cry.” He also tried out “Sitting Pretty,” from the NASCAR-themed CD Inside Traxx; the song is slated as a single in August.

Eighteen songs into the set, when lesser entertainers would be bidding farewell, Yoakam pumped up the crowd with a surprise appearance from bluegrass banjo legend Earl Scruggs and his son Randy. “Borrowed Love,” a highlight of their three-song stint, appeared on the 2001 album, Earl Scruggs and Friends. Yoakam and the Scruggses co-wrote the track.

Then the shrieking resumed, even louder than before. It’s hard to say whether it was for the undeniably cool hits or for Yoakam’s signature on-stage wiggling. Either way, the place got darn loud throughout “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere,” “Streets of Bakersfield,” “Honky Tonk Man” and “Fast as You.”

In the countless concerts held in the Ryman, it’s unlikely that many performers have gotten such a deafening, unrelenting request for an encore. Yoakam finally obliged with “Free to Go” and “Long White Cadillac.”

In a night blissfully free of obnoxious power ballads, Pinmonkey proved a potent opener throughout a dozen songs. Short on chatter but deep on talent, the five-man band made it clear that their career is likely to last far beyond their first hit, “Barbed Wire and Roses.”

Every musician in Pinmonkey –- Michael Reynolds on vocals, Chad Jeffers on Dobro, Michael Jeffers on bass and Rick Schell on drums -– is a master of his instrument. It may remind some listeners of a bluegrass version of the Byrds. If their upcoming album on BNA Records captures their charisma on stage, expect it to be one of the year’s most compelling releases.

Alan Jacksons steelpicker heter Robbie Flint och han spelar på en Derby. Tja, vad finns det för andra märken? Jag skojar bara förstås, men jag spelar själv på en D-10 Derby.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Dolly Parton is back on tour with music from a surprising new album

    It’s been 10 years since Dolly Parton went on the road. Now, with the release of her new album, Halos & Horns, the country superstar-turned-bluegrass diva is more than ready to go back. But this time things will be different.

   “It’ll be simple,” reveals Dolly of the 13-city tour across America. “There will be less production and more music. We won’t have big lights or big sound or big videos. It’s about the music. It’s about going out and not having to sing over the electric guitars or the drums. I can just focus on the songs and tell the stories.”

Dolly’s been telling stories and charting No. 1s for over 30 years. She wrote all but two songs on Halos & Horns – and says she “just knows” when she’s written something special.

Det här är fantastiskt! Dolly spelar in sin tredje bluegrassplatta och går mot strömmen. Hon drar ned på hela turnéproduktionen och som hon skriver det blir "more music"!  Hoppas att det här är en trend i USA och att den sedan sprider sig till övriga världen. Det är för många avdankade rockmusikanter vid mixerborden, speciellt i Sverige!

Har du varit i Texas omkring Dallas/Fort Worthområdet och missat Cowboys i Arlington så är det bara att beklaga. Klubben är unik med sin uppbyggnad och inredning. Musiken där är inte alltid "pure" country, som man skulle önska, men stämningen är verkligen Texas honky tonk. Stort jubileum i helgen som gick!

Yoakam’s Next CD Will Be an Electrodisc

After years of recording for Warner Bros.-owned Reprise Records, Dwight Yoakam has formed his own entertainment company, Electrodisc Sights and Sounds.

Plans are to partner with another company for distribution, marketing and promotion of Yoakam’s recordings. The Los Angeles-based singer is “looking at a couple” of companies with Nashville offices says his manager, Mark Hartley of Fitzgerald Hartley.

Yoakam will bankroll the new company himself. He’ll concentrate on his music, though he may do a live DVD later. There are no plans initially to sign other artists.

“He’s looking at doing a studio album, and then he’s also looking at doing either a hymns album or a bluegrass album -– something where he can stretch creatively, as opposed to what he normally does,” Hartley says. The first CD could come as early as the first quarter of 2003.

Yoakam toured in the spring and summer with Brooks & Dunn’s Neon Circus tour, which comes to an end Sunday (July 28). He’ll do some dates on his own, then turn his attention to recording in September. His appearance in the Jodie Foster film Panic Room has upped interest in his acting, and he’s looking at scripts, Hartley says.

Warner Bros. will issue a compilation of Yoakam’s odds and ends and B-sides in the fall, and he has two tracks –- “Wheels” and “Some Dark Holler” –- on Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Vol. III, coming Oct. 1 on Capitol Records.

JACKSON TO BE PART OF SEPT. 11TH ANNIVERSARY OBSERVANCE

The Washington Post is reporting that Alan Jackson will be part of a prime time concert on NBC on the night of September 11th. The concert will take place at The Kennedy Center in Washington. Gloria Estefan and Placido Domingo will also be there.

Ralph Stanley Museum Underway in Virginia

The town of Clintwood, Va., has secured a building and is raising funds to create a museum in honor of singer and native son Ralph Stanley. Clintwood, which has a population of 1,500, is the county seat of Dickenson County, where Stanley was born in 1927. Stanley has approved the project and pledged to donate artifacts to it.

God söndagsmorgon!  Jag har just tagit en cykeltur tillsammans med hustru Eva utmed Mälarens strand. Ja, åtminstone en liten bit av den eftersom det väl skulle ta en vecka att cykla runt sjön. Här kommer lite nyheter till er och jag hoppas ni hittar något av intresse. Hoppas att augusti blir lika fin som sommaren i övrigt varit!

There was a real murder on music row back in 1989. Kevin Hughes, a 23-year old researcher at Cash Box magazine, was gunned down on 16th Avenue as he left a recording studio with buddy Sammy Sadler, a singer. The ski masked gunman also wounded Sadler during the incident. The killer got away.
     There have been rumors the past 13 years. Most centered on payola, the mob, coercion. Since Hughes put the numbers together that decided chart positions for Cash Box, the general feeling was that he may have been killed because he wouldn't manipulate the charts.
Metro Nashville's Cold Case Unit has been reviewing the murder for awhile. Last week, police arrested Richard F. D'Antonio, 56, in Las Vegas, and charged him with first-degree murder in the slaying of Hughes. He was also charged with attempted murder in the shooting of Sadler. D'Antonio is a former employee of Cash Box who was working as a record promoter at the time of the shootings, according to police reports. At the time of his arrest, D'Antonio was employed by Fitzgeralds Casino in Las Vegas as a pit boss.
Nashville Metro Police aren't talking much about the specifics of the case. More arrests are possible.

GEORGE TO RELEASE 'LIVE' CD

George Strait's first-ever live album is expected to be released in early fall. Country Music Television says Strait, who has released two live videos, recorded the set in a per-
formance earlier this year. The live compact disc will come out during Strait's 21-date tour scheduled to begin Sept.12.

Boots for Paisley
Brad Paisley will have another pair of boots in his closet, compliments of Tommy Shane Steiner. Capitol Saddlery of Austin, Texas, owned and operated by the Steiner family, flew bootmaker Ramon to Nashville Tuesday (July 30) to measure Paisley for some custom boots. Steiner will join Paisley on selected dates of the upcoming CMT Most Wanted Live Tour. The tour begins Sept. 19. Tour Dates 07/31/02

Ralph Stanley to Film First Music Video
Singer Ralph Stanley will begin filming his first music video during an upcoming stop on the “Down From the Mountain Tour.” Representatives from Stanley’s record label, DMZ/Columbia, say the core of the video will be a live performance of “Girl From the Greenbriar Shore” but that the location for the filming has not yet been settled on. In addition to the actual performance footage, plans call for backstage and autographing scenes. Jim May will direct. 07/29/02

Roy Rogers’ Museum Moves to Branson
The Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum is leaving Victorville, Calif., for Branson, Mo. Due to open in spring 2003, the museum will include a theater and is being built on four acres behind Yakov Smirnoff’s theater at a cost of $3 million. A two-time member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, as a solo act and as a member of the Sons of the Pioneers, Rogers died in 1998. Evans died in 2001. Tim McGraw’s Uncle Arraigned for Murder
Dennis J. McGraw, uncle of Tim McGraw, was arraigned Friday (July 19) in Solano County (Calif.) Superior Court for the murder of his neighbor, Jason Garfield, the Vallejo News reports. McGraw is accused of shooting Garfield outside their apartment building on Saturday (July 13). Judge Alan Carter set a preliminary hearing for next Friday (July 26). 07/19/02

Parton Will Tour UK, Ireland
In her first tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland since 1983, Dolly Parton will play five dates in October to support her new album, Halos & Horns. As with her American tour, Parton will be backed by the Blueniques. The shows will be billed as “An Evening with Dolly Parton” and will have no opening act. Tour stops include Glasgow, Scotland, Oct. 16; London, Oct. 22-23; Manchester, England, Oct. 26; and Dublin, Ireland, Oct. 29. 07/19/02

ALAN JACKSON HAS #2 BEST SELLING ALBUM NATIONWIDE

Alan Jackson's DRIVE has sold 2.25 million copies making it the second biggest selling album in the nation for the first half of 2002 (Eminem's THE EMINEM SHOW, with 3.63 million sold is #1 from Jan. 1 to June 30, totals from Billboard). The other country album in the top five is the O'BROTHER soundtrack.

JAMES ALAN SHELTON RELEASES SONG FOR GRETA

James Alan Shelton, lead guitarist of Ralph Stanley's legendary Clinch Mountain Boys band, has issued (July 31) his 7th album, Song For Greta. Although primarily an instrumental showcase, the Rebel Records album does contain three vocal selections, including Gillian Welch and David Rawlings' period-perfect cover of the Carter Family's "Fifty Miles Of Elbow Room."

Composer of 'He'll Have to Go' dies

Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Joe Allison died yesterday afternoon in Saint Thomas Hospital. Mr. Allison, 77, died of respiratory failure after a long battle with lung disease. He is remembered as the composer of such hits as the Jim Reeves' classic He'll Have to Go and Faron Young's Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young.
